Do you think Seattle could get rid of the panhandlers if they gave a $100 fine to anyone giving them money?

I'm really tired of these people begging with signs that say God Bless. Most are just looking for their next drug deal. If you give them money there is a good chance you are helping a felon. We have social services to help people, let them stand in line for food stamps or go to the food bank. They obviously have the time to do so.

Personally, I would prefer to continue living in an open and free society and occasionally have to put up with minor inconveniences -- such as panhandlers and your troglodyte opinions -- than to begin living in a rigidly controlled police state in which all disorder and bad behavior is subject to disproportional punishment and prior restraint.

    But that's just me.

Just don't give them money and don't feel guilty about it. When I made it a general policy to never give money to panhandlers, it was pretty amazing how easy it was to say no.

It's true, dmanjam. We DO have social services. They are so comprehensive and well-funded that there is no way anyone in Seattle could conceivably be hungry or homeless. I mean, really... Those people are just looking for their next drug deal, clearly and with very little exception.

But why should we punish the victim? We are the ones who have to stomach looking at these unwashed paupers in the streets. If we give them a dime out of fear that they might touch us with their stinky paws, why should we be fined?

What we need is a rigidly enforced caste system in Seattle. If one of the untouchables dares to look their betters (that's us!) directly in the eyes, we should have all the clearance we need to administer a public flogging on the spot.

Are you with me? We are reasonable people, after all.

Do you feel the same way about people wearing ugly shirts? Or reading stupid books on the bus? If not, what is it that makes you upset about what other people are doing, since it doesn't affect you in any way directly?

May you never find yourself at the end of your rope, with nowhere to turn, sick, cold, alone, and afraid.

Yeah the god bless is a bit much for the least-religious city in the nation. Agreed.

    However...

Yeah, the only thing worse is people in Qland begging for the ostracization of an entire community of Seattle's populace and trying to penalize the personal choice of generosity (even misplaced, it's still a personal choice).

    Most=Felon? Most=drug dealers?
Stats and cite - or it doesn't exist.

    Corrections:
There's no line to stand in for foodstamps, you dinosaur - they have computers & phonelines for that now. In fact, foodstamps don't really exist anymore either, as they come in the form of an ATM card (spendable only on food, and even then not on hot food or bottled water). Though it begs the question: where do you think DSHS would MAIL the card and approval letters to?
    and
That bountiful food you imagine from the food bank (that only gives out a couple times a week if you're lucky)...
what fridge should the homeless put that food in to keep it safe from causing health problems? (Milk goes bad in 4 hours unless kept at 42 or lower).
Or were you thinking non-perishables like chef-boy-r-dee or mac&cheese?
Great: what oven should they cook that pasta on?

    ...*sigh*

Perhaps, if SPD enforced such a ridiculous law in every instance, which they obviously could not. So to sum it up, no.
