Mark Eitzel, Red House Painters, Mark Hollis, Henryk Gorecki's and Chopin's compositions. Richard Hawley also, perhaps. Some of Erik Satie's compositions -- I am thinking of Gymnopedies no. 1 in particular.

I have the perfect mix cd, which I titled "Drinking in the Dark."

My favorites are The Smiths and The Cure.

Come to think of it, the Garden State soundtrack should do the trick too.

Everybody has gotten to most of the top picks (The Cure, Joy Division, Elliott Smith, The Smiths), but there's one notable exception that's been missed: Tom Waits.

Buy "Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards," pour yourself a stiff drink, and listen only to the "Bawlers" disc.

Track down a copy of the SWANS album Public Castration is a Good Idea. That will shake your foundations.

I have my own compilation CD which I call Catharsis. It starts with Bill Withers' Lean on Me, goes on to R.E.M.'s Everybody Hurts, Joan Osbourne's Crazy Baby, Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush's Don't Give Up, and goes on in that vein.

The Avett Brothers, Timothy Seth Avett as Darling, Stars, Nicole Atkins, The everybodyfields

Though note that almost everyone on this list has some kind of bluegrass influence.

Weakerthans, Jets to Brazil, Waxwing, Pedro the Lion. Those are usually my go to when I want to throw a pity party.
