Any recommendations for an easy to use, reasonably priced, good-quality GPS system?

It's my father-in-law's 70th birthday. He's not a gadget guy but loved the GPS system in a rental car. So any recs for a system that works well and is straight forward in it's usage would be much appreciated.

Specifically, I would recommend the Garmin 255WT. Like the others, I find Garmin more intuitive than Tom Tom. Also, its bold graphics lend themselves to easy veiewing (even from aging eyes).

The 255 WT is about the cheapest model I've seen with live traffic updates (for life, without a monthly subscription). Which is nice.

Even my technophobe husband loves his Garmin 205. Simple to use, inexpensive, nice readable screen, and it's found him several routes that were much quicker than ones he already knew about. I added the traffic receiver for $90, and that's saved him from many nasty delays.

I've had both a Garmin and Tomtom. The Garmin is extremely easy to use and reliable, I ended up giving the Garmin to my Dad. He can barely figure out his DVR remote, but the Garmin was easy for him to figure out. For my birthday, I was given a Tomtom, but don't like it as much.

I'd recommend going to gpsmagazine.com for additional ideas. It gives recommendations as well as models to avoid.

A friend of mine uses one of the Garmin systems, which I believe is middle of the road price wise and hasn't let her down yet. She's self-employed and drives all over the city/region and the GPS system has helped her through a number of winding suburban neighborhoods.

The only downside is that with out it she can't really get around. :)
