Mars Hill Church - reliable intel on how fundy they are?

I heard they are pretty conservative (not terribly pro-women or terribly anti-gay) a few years back. is that still the case? I need to know about the general perception of them before my org partners will them on projects.

Per friends who know actual Mars Hill churchgoers, they're telling followers to vote against R-71 because all gays are sinners who will burn in hell. Make of that what you will.

I attended 6 services at the Wedgewood location last summer and fundy isn't the word I would use. I think cult in the truest classical sense of the word is a more apt description of Mars Hill.

First off, I won't pretend to be an authority on their overall congregation. One guy I used to work with was a devout attendee, and this guy was apeshit crazy. He held some very antiquated ideas about gender roles (i.e. women belong in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant), was staunchly anti-gay, and made no distinction between atheists and satanists, literally telling me once that "it's an equally good thing when either die."

He put a bunch of copies of a book their pastor wrote in the employee lounge, and browsing through one made me shudder; not just at this guy's inane attempts to be funny, but at what parts of the bible are to be taken literally versus which ones are open to interpretation.

You should hit up their website and watch a sermon or two if you really want to get the full scope of what this church pushes, but I for one would avoid altogether any activity which would give this cult money or publicity.

Like Jim, l won't pretend to be an authority on the subject, but if you are looking to avoid misogyny and anti-gay rhetoric, you will find both at Mars Hill in generous quantities.

Ridiculous posts here. I've been a member there for over 10 years. A cult is a church that says they are the only way to heaven, which has never been preached at Mars. They have steadily preached Jesus and the gospel without fail and have been more honest and open than most churches. Noriega would never pick on a child, I have 4 and all have been doted upon by this loving pastor. Be very careful what you read people.

Mars Hill Church promotes divorce regardless of adultery. They abuse children. They led my friend to commit suicide. They preach one thing, and do the opposite. Mark Driscoll teaches people how to punch people in the throat. They are as liberal as liberal gets. I went there for 5 years and tried to fix them for 2 1/2 years. My 3 year old son was being picked on my Pastor James Noriega of Mars Hill Church. It's so sick it makes me mad in the greatest sense of the word. So, no, they're not fundamental.

I am a Christian. I am pro men's rights (so I am not that camp of feminists who hates Mars Hill), I am not pro-homosexual (so I am not that camp of homosexuals who hates Mars Hill). I am simply a Christian who reads the bible a lot and knows what is going on and doesn't like it.

Mars Hill is a church that Hitler could call home.

My best friend is a pretty, quite sexually-liberated (and liberal in general but apolitical) Christian lady that has been to Mars Hill on a couple of occasions. She reports getting grievously hit upon (she wasn't looking, just wanted some Xtian friends)and feels that the pastor's sermons are "pretty good in terms of scripture" but that she'd never go back, so she listens to them online. She doesn't agree with the way the pastor talks about women but agrees with the way he talks about Jesus, I think. Anyway, you can always vet the place online.

Hitler could call home? Dear God I hope not. I attend Mars Hill Church and I've never seen anyone abusing children, just today several couple's children were dedicated to the Lord and children are considered a blessing. I have not seen the church do anything out of the ordinary of Christianity that would put them in a "cult" status. The bible says to love your enemy and to love those who do wrong against you. There is no condemnation in Jesus Christ. The bible states, in Romans 1:26, that humans sought the lust of their own hearts instead of acknowledging God and gave into sin. So it is not like they are trying to slander gay people it is just that the bible says it is wrong and it does not Glorify God. Christians can be called hypocrites but we all mess up, everyone is a sinner and it doesn't matter what we've done but where we are going right now. I know no matter what I say though there are people that think homosexuality is perfectly fine or that God doesn't even exist and I'm not going to change your mind. I'll keep you in my prayers and I hope you find Jesus one day.

    Love,
    JB
