If you could stay in any hotel in downtown San Francisco aside from The Mandarin, The St. Regis, and The Taj where would you want to stay?

Preferably somewhere around Union Square

Urban. The room I had looked at another building. It is a chain of 6 or so places. I toured the Diva and it was also very nice, especially the corner rooms. I assume they are all similar older hotels with recent high-fashion make overs. They are still old hotels though.

The W has some nice views and is walking distance from everything yet a new building and all that goes with that.

The Fairmont. Totally gorgeous, lovely rooms, and a tiki bar with a giant lagoon and fake thunderstorms!

Best hotel room I've ever had was the downtown Marriott in San Francisco. It spoiled me forever after.

I agree about The Fairmount. I also really like Hotel Diva on Geary St. (near Union Sq.) which is pretty convenient to the rest of downtown.

The new-ish (1 yr old) InterCon is sweet.. kinda pricy though.

Huntington Hotel, atop Nob Hill, is a family-owned, legacy-laden, relatively small hotel. It's a favorite among "celebs".

i always have really good luck with the priceline.com name your own price thing. last time i was in sf i stayed at the hilton in union square for like $80! 4 star hotel, pretty fucking nice!

(just be careful when you're marking your criteria - because there is no going back once you enter your credit card).
