What's the best way to start learning Japanese in Seattle?

I'm looking for a beginning Japanese course I can take in the evenings after work. Pedagogically I prefer the TPR approach (Total Physical Response -- gets you speaking a little bit within the first hour, without the crutch of English) but I'll take what I can get. Recommendations, warnings, advice all welcome. Thanks in advance -- Erik

Seattle Language Academy on the canal in Fremont (used to be on Capitol Hill on 15th) is a really good school with evening classes. I pursued a different language there and so don't know the Japanese language faculty, but study was definitely oriented toward the kind of immersion you are describing and also toward grown-ups with jobs.

Well, UW has a great program. Do you have enough money to blow on that? Don't quote me on this but I think night classes and stuff are about $1,000 per quarter. I took 2 years and could speak confidently.

I think it'd get you much better at Japanese than just about anything else. With language it is truly hard to cut corners. And simply not recommended.
