Sad truth, that. l'd probably be the one that went, "Who the fuck do you think you are?", and end up with a black eye. But hey, better than not standing up for your fellow man. No offense to those who would prefer to avoid the ensuing conflict, l'm just a whippersnapper that way.

Maybe l'm missing something, but....what does hate crime have to do with the inclusive nature of a community? l assume 'inclusive' was meant to denote the welcoming quality of the gay community. l'm not sure how that ties to hate crimes committed by those who actively avoid being included in the first place to the point of violently setting themselves apart from it.

Also, the only story that might be behind it that was even remotely justified is if they knew each other, hated each other, and the invective was hurled with the specific intent to personally attack them, maybe defensively. Even then, there's no excuse for it, any more than it is to substitute the word 'fags' for 'breeders' and consider it acceptable.

Inclusive was meant to denote the open minded, PFLAG-y, liberal/progressives and 2nd-Gen hippies typical for Cap hill.
It's not like it's Kent or Monroe or whatever: new people move in, and everyone shrugs. Methinks we like diversity here, gay or otherwise.
And there's little chance they knew each other: the dad mumbled something about "what the fuck is her problem" and the family looked like liberal Dems of the lesser-affluent Urbanite cafe crowd, in their 30's. Rude yeller was early 20's androgeny girl, pierced lip and ratty fauxpunk fatigues. Not sure, but looked pretty damn random as they were going opposite directions. Both are typical denizens of the Hill, even if they don't hang in the same circles.
@cato: As far as the hate crimes, I've been here since 1995, so yes, I've seen hate crimes, q patrol, teargassing, more hate crimes and blight. But this was new.
But attacks on gays aren't really anything to do with verbal assaults on kids/parents. And almost all those incidents were folks not from the hill coming here to be wrathful bigots.

RE: lnclusive, this was my interpretation of your usage, which is why l was confused as to where hate crime came into this. Maybe some confusion on Cato's part, and read it as *Seattle* being inclusive of the gay community, instead of the gay community *itself* being the inclusive?

That was my response to this answer, but l decided to keep my mouth shut. l'm not sure that commenting on wholly inappropriate behavior and a beatdown are mutually exclusive. Most bullies are all bark and no bite anyway; their spines shrink when they realize they have more than a couple of protective parents willing to avoid confrontation, and a couple of protective parents who might be willing to stand up to them more especially because they have backup. Also, easy enough to call the cops while fending off stupid little punk rock chicks - they're crawling Cap Hill to begin with (the cops, that is).

l chose not to downvote this one because l think the first sentence is a wise one.
