Anyone have Christmas gift recommendations for my conservative step-father?

He's your typical Glen Beck lovin', christian who thinks Mexicans are taking over "our" country and that health care reform is a Socialist plot to destroy America. He also works for the government! I'm trying hard to figure out a gift idea that isn't aimed at satisfying my urge to stick it to him (membership to the ACLU) but all I can come up with is socks.

How about a donation in his name to the Freedom From Religion Foundation?

Or maybe a bright pink, Glenn Beck-shaped butt plug.

His politics matter as little to a good gift choice as it does to us libs. Just because someone loves Obama, thinks health care reform is a watered down tragedy, doesn't own a car for environmental reasons, composts, bitches about Seattle's lack attitude towards recycling, doesn't eat meat, and makes love to a mannequin of Al Gore every night, doesn't mean that they WANT a membership to the ACLU or anything else that would stereotypically be considered liberal.

People are more complex than their politics. Way more complex. Find out what he likes, and get him something related.

If he loves socks, then that might be a great gift. I can imagine getting socks that I really liked.

Yes. Don't be mean. Buy him something he might actually like - a useful tool, bottle of hooch, a book, a movie on DVD - but for your mother's sake, if not for his, don't use gift-giving as a chance to be passive-aggressive. If you can't resist the urge, then don't buy him a gift. I hated my stepfather, so I simply stopped buying him gifts when I moved away from home.

Um, for the sake of familial harmony, avoid anything remotely political. Conservative guys like conservative stuff. How about a nice sweater (or sweater vest) in a traditional pattern like Fair Isle?

Or you could go with the framed poster of Che Guevara, but you're going to suffer.

Is he an NRA mamber yet? does he own a 'nice' american flag? is it still possible for you to get an autographed copy of 'Going Rogue'?
Just some ideas to get you going, if all else fails there's always truck-nuts.
Although, if you can't stick it to your conservative step-father who can you stick it to?

Does he wear shirts? T shirts? Does he have a sense of humor? Get him a funny t shirt! Or just something lighthearted in general. I got my dad a Simpsons shirt when i was a teenager and we weren't getting along all that well. He still wears it I think. Good luck!

Does the man have no other interests outside of "Glen Beck lovin'?"

I suggest you go with Fnarf's recommendation or go with a gift card to a store he enjoys. A bottle of booze or wine also makes a nice, non-political gift.
