looked in all nooks and crannies and can't find a bed bug but wake with with bites....!

I have looked all over my apartment...under the mattress, under the box spring, in cracks, in creases...every where. No sign of a bug or bug poop. But I often wake up with what looks likes bed bug bites. Bites in a row that itch like crazy! Do I have bed bugs?

Unfortunately there is no way to tell if a red bump is from a bed bug or from any number of environmental irritants or skin conditions. Everyone reacts differently. Red bumps can be a good indicator or a potential infestation. I would recommend having a qualified pest management firm come in and inspect for a potential infestation. Ask for them to use a Bed Bug Monitoring Device to see if there are bed bugs that cannot be detected visually. You can also purchase the Climb Up Interceptor to help you see if there are really bed bugs in your home.

I was going to get that it might be a flea... expecially if it's in a row, and the insect has moved on.

I note your avitar is a kitty. Do you have cats in the home, and are they indoor or outdoor? Have you flea bombed your home?

Having had bed bugs, I'll say that bites are not what tipped me off to their presence (something I have to remind myself every time I freak out over a pimple or mosquito bite). What did tip me off was the combination of blood stains on the sheets and a creepy crawly sensation that I woke up to in the middle of the night... and then 2 weeks later seeing a bed bug.

Also, unless you have a long time dermatologist they will have difficulty discerning whether your bumps are bed bug bites or something else.

So while you shouldn't freak out, you probably should pursue a bed bug detection method. In addition to the products listed by the bedbug dude, having a bed bug dog inspect your house might be a good idea.

I'm lucky enough to not experience the itching, and I'm not self-aware enough to check for or notice bites. The way I know it's time to swing back into proaction is when I see the blood stains the next day on the sheets/pillowcases from when I crush a freshly sated bug by moving in my sleep.

There are a number of skin or health conditions that can result in the same 'bug bite' looking symptoms. One weird example I found is that when the liver gets overloaded with toxins it can't process, sometimes your body will work those toxins out through the skin. Sounds really gross, looks like tiny bug bites, turns out I had developed a food allergy at age 24. Who knew. Bodies are weird.

Check for fleas first - make a trap. Option 1 is using a desk lamp close over a bowl of soapy water that you keep on under your bed at night; option 2 is getting what is essentially a nightlight with masking tape sticky-side-out on it. The fleas are attracted to the heat and then get caught.

Bites in a row are pretty symptomatic of bedbugs. Otherwise, I'd be inclined to suspect you're allergic to something in your laundry regimen (my husband breaks out in a rash if I use a color-safe bleach on anything that touches his skin).
