Do only crazies and weirdos use meetup.com groups to meet people?

I'm a bit of an introvert and new to Seattle, and I've been having a difficult time making new friends, something that has led me to consider one of the groups on meetup.com. Do only losers and/or weirdos gravitate to this site, or is this a legitimately good way to meet people?

    I actually signed up at meetup.com and joined the PNW Leisure Hiking group. I haven't gone hiking yet with this group yet. My first hike will be on the 20th of March. I can bring my daughter too. I hope the people end up being at least pretty cool.

    Nope. Not only, but of course there are some. But if you are perceptive enough you can avoid those people easily.

    I have no idea about the purely social groups, but it's a good place for interest groups. I'm going to two tech-oriented meetups next week that will be neither weird nor crazy.
