What do you think would happen if...?

I have this idea where I buy an old briefcase from a thrift store and fill it with fake (but green enough at a glance) money. Then I take it on the bus and leave it. I think that depending on the route and the section of the bus, there would be a wide range of reaction, from confusion, mild amusement to even outright anger.

I was watching some DvD where a person had to deliver some ransom money and a light-bulb went on in my head. The briefcase is the easy part. Now for the money...

The problem with this is that city-folk have a tendency to ignore things. Things cause trouble, you know.

If you want to have fun with the whole "briefcase full o' cash" trope, may I suggest a variation on "Killer" (see one version here: http://www.sjgames.com/killer/ ) where the target is the person with the briefcase? Kill them, take the briefcase, and watch your back to win?

I'd guess you'll be lucky to get off with a malicious mischief charge if anyone fights over it.

Worse case scenario, the FBI shows up on your doorstep and you end up doing 20 years in a federal penitentiary on counterfeiting charges.

Hacking the system for entertainment is fun but try something a little less riot-inducing, like gluing quarters to the sidewalk.

edit: hadn't even considered the terrorist aspect of leaving an unattended briefcase in public as other QLers have suggested. That's a whole other set of charges.

In my opinion, that's probably not such a hot idea.

This happened at my office a couple weeks ago: Someone left a briefcase (empty) wedged betweeen the wall and the soda machine. An employee found it and alerted his boss. twenty minutes later the bomb-squad showed up, the office was evacuated and we all lost half a day of work. Apparently, briefcase + soda machine = Die Hard III.

Would it be like yelling "Fire!" in a theater?

If someone got hurt from fighting over it or something like that, you would probably be liable. Or, worse, the police get called and waste a lot of time trying to sort out what is going on, only to find out that it was fake. I am not sure if that is a crime, but I would imagine they would not be happy with you.
