Is this joke racist?

I JUST HEARD THAT OBAMA IS GOING TO IMPOSE A 40% TAX ON ASPIRIN BECAUSE IT'S WHITE AND IT WORKS.

I just got in a big ol' argument with someone that insists it isn't. It is though, right?

It's racist because it reinforces a negative cultural stereotype, i.e. that black people are "lazy". To say otherwise is naive at best.

    Also, ew.

Is assumption of race is not about "white", it's about "black": African-American.

Telling a jackass joke is an action, btw. All words are actions.

in general, if you have to ask if a joke is racist or not, it is. Just like how when people say, "I'm not a racist, but..." they usual follow it was some ass backwards racist shit. But that joke definitely is racist. Besides- wikipedia's picture for aspirin is orange.

Did this joke cause a hostile work environment? Did it make you feel unsafe or uncomfortable? If you're asking the question, then it did, didn't it. I'm not going to write anyone up this time but I am going to put a note in his file. If anything of this sort comes up again he'll be "talked to"

I disagree with the comment that says it re-inforces the stereo type of the lazy black man. And I'm not being inentionaly naive when I say that.

I may be wrong, but isn't the joke about Obama's tax policy and the group most likely to be affected by it? I dunno. Maybe I'm just less sensitive/more colorbind than others.

My definition of racist implies actions or outcomes, not words.

But that joke is definitely off color, probably offensive to a lot of people, and not suitable for mixed company or children.

Not to mention makes the teller sound like a real piece of work.

    What was your friend's argument?

Using an anthropologically defination (not a governmental one) no it is not racist because 'white' is not a race. The term caucasian has never been used to define white people (ie arabs and north indians are causasian), it is more about facial structure than skin colour.

If racism is to segregate according to race and you assume white to be a race (like the US government does) then yes it is racist.

Most importantly, it is not a good joke...not because of any racial element but just because it is not funny.
