Do you tip the cable guy?

I never have before, but today I was thinking that $5 seems fair. Do you think enough people tip them that they expect it?

I've never given a cable guy money. But I did have a really good conversation about Hunter Thompson with one once, and I ended up giving him an extra HST book I had on the shelf.

I don't think they expect tips, though. Like Mahtli says, they make a decent living.

I have generally been not pleased with cable guys. Maybe it's just bad luck, but the ones I get seem to go out of their way to do the bare minimum.

I usually get scolded about having too many splitters, which rubs me the wrong way. (Why then, Comcast, did you run the cable from the pole to the wall outside my kitchen, the one room in the entire house that will never have a TV or computer?)

They do seem to be a bit overworked and stressed, but they make a mint on overtime pay. I once knew a guy who pulled down 120K/year hooking up cable.

So, to answer your question, No.

No. He's a service man that the company sent to me so THEY could get my business.

He doesn't deserve anything more than his standard wage from the company. Unless... he puts in two extra jacks, or gives some special consideration to give me ten extra feet on the cable extension so I can re-arrange my living room, or something OUT OF THE ORDINARY!

But I don't concider a repairman or an installer to be service personnel.

If the cable guy hooks you up with something nice or overlooks a standard charge, then YES.

Otherwise, if she/he is just doing the job and doesn't care if you are human or not, then no.

90 percent of the time I don't think to tip, unless it's a situation where I'm paying at the time of service. I'm trying to get better about tipping where someone has to put in a lot of physical effort (furniture delivery), but in other cases tipping just doesn't come automatically and seems counterintuitive. Why would I tip for flower delivery but not UPS?

i tip anyone who has come to my house and done good work for me. if you have problems with the cable later and get the same service tech., you will be super pleased. (this has happened to me before).
