International Insurance?

I'm moving to Costa Rica this summer and wondering about health insurance while I'm there. I plan on being there for a year so I figure should I get some kind of insurance.

Where should I go for international insurance? Should I go to a broker? Should I look online? How much should I pay?

I work in the insurance industry, but my specialty is commercial insurance, so I'm not as familiar with the personal side, although I do speak fluent insurance-ese. You might want to go through a local agent just because they can give you options and answer any questions you may have. Most smaller insurance agencies probably won't be able to help you, so in this case you might want to go with a larger one. I feel weird about recommending an agency to you since I work for one. If you make some calls you should be able to find one who can help you. Look for an independent agency that has relationships with multiple insurance carriers as they can typically provide you with the most options.

That said, a quick google search led me to International Medical Group, which looks legit (that doesn't mean it is, of course). You could apply for this coverage separately and see if they can offer you a better quote than whatever you get through an agent.

Just remember to read the fine print before you purchase anything, ask questions if you don't understand what you read, and read your policy once you receive it. Most people don't actually read their insurance policies, which can lead to trouble down the line. Also, don't opt for a deductible that is more than you could afford.

If you're looking for "travel insurance", check out Worldnomads.com. I've used them for international trips, and the costs are quite reasonable while covering a wide variety of things including medical.

If you're just looking for health insurance, Costa Rica does have a universal, "free" health care system. I'm not sure if you would be covered as a foreigner, but it's worth finding out. Even if not, being a non-"western" country, any medical costs you might incur (barring emergency evacuation, which travel insurance covers) will be very low.

Also see if you can find an expat site or forum for Costa Rica. A year is a long time, and maybe there's health insurance that you can buy from inside the country that will cover what you need.

    Hope that helps.
