Why Are Americans So Fat ?

It seems as if everyday people are getting fatter by the second. It really disgusts me when i see more and more fat people eating fast food crap. Especially when it is the mom, dad, and their kids, who are also fat.

You know what disgusts me? Haters and bigots. Way more disgusting if you ask me. But, I'm fat, so what does it matter. I'm just part of the blobby sea of fat Americans, and obviously I should not be allowed in a fast food place. Only skinny people like Dave Lee should be allowed to go to fast food places, because fat people are so completely disgusting. I mean, how dare fat people show their fat, ugly faces and gross bodies in public. They should be locked in cages and hidden away until they lose the weight, especially if the fat people consist of a WHOLE AWFUL family!

People eat fast food because it's cheap (subsidized by the guvamint), fast, and tasty (fat and salt and sugar taste good, there's no sense denying it).

However, much of the fattening of America has already taken place, while other countries are behind us and thus have more room to grow. Countries you wouldn't necessarily expect, like France and Greece, are catching up fast. Fast food is everywhere.

Basically, humans are like those rats in the cage that just want to hit the pleasure center over and over. Fat, salt, sugar, fat, salt, sugar until we die.

Are you Dan Savage's Questionland sockpuppet?

If you stay away from fast food restaurants, you won't see so many fat people eating fast food.

Several factors for the rising numbers of the obese:

    1. near omnipresence of sugar and cheap sweeteners in processed foods like bread, soft drinks, condiments and cereal.

    2. undiagnosed food allergies can contribute to wider midsections.

    3. cravings for complex carbohydrates or starches. Or overrepresentation of grains in the USDA Food pyramid.

    4. "food deserts" - large and isolated geographic areas where mainstream grocery stores are absent or distant.

    5. genetics or glandular problems.

    6. digestive problems.

    7. hypothyroidism.

    8. laziness.

We go to McDonalds every once in awhile (like, once every 2 months or so). It's cheap, convenient, and you can let your kid loose on those big playland structures. I feel OK about it seeing as how my kid is underweight anyway. And if you have kids, a drive-thru is a gift from God. Mostly, though, people eat there because they are poor, exhausted, and in a hurry. And, yeah, if you get dried beans and shit, then your food bill will be lower, but most poor people are also working and raising kids, and that's an investment in time and mental energy most can't make. If I were you I wouldn't worry about it so much; someday you may be in a situation where people get to judge you without knowing anything about you.

One policy issue that plays into this is the US Farm Bill, which the US congress passes every few years (3? 10?) and which allocates what subsidies will be provided to farmers. Farmers are going to grow the products that make the most economic sense. The foods that, as a result, are the most profitable are corn, meat and dairy. The subsidies for fruits and veggies are sickeningly low, comparatively. Whenever this bill comes up for renewal, all sorts of special interests come out of the woodwork, and those tend to be the large agricultural and food companies, which have a large stake in seeing that things don't change too much.

Also, the fractured role of the US Department of Agriculture doesn't help. They are simultaneously charged with setting nutritional standards and promoting American agriculture by getting people to buy/consume the foods that are being made.

For an interesting comparison of agricultural subsidies and nutritional guidelines, see the chart at this website:

Because they don't care what you think of them?

Blame it on: Environment -- It's virtually impossible to find food not loaded with carbs and sugar unless you pay top dollar for it or make it yourself. Work schedules -- Americans work harder than almost anyone except maybe the Japanese. General ignorance -- One thing I've noticed among the very obese people I know is how little they pay attention to how much they eat. The fat person who stuffs his/her face with fast food is an ugly stereotype. In my experience, fat people eat what everyone else eats, although in larger portions.

The fact is that restraint is difficult, dieting is even more difficult, and most people are too stressed out and too busy to successfully do either. Be thankful that, through a combination of nature and nurture, YOU managed to avoid the trap of obesity, and leave the fatties alone.

Why do holier-than-thou, self-hating, pretentious Americans ask so many damn rhetorical questions about their country? You want a pat on the back?

Cool judgementalism. Nakedly honest much? (I'm mostly serious here)

Yes, americans, more than other people ON AVERAGE from other nations are indeed getting fatter. By the second.
As far as how disgusted you are, I hope you see the irony of sitting your ass down at the computer to complain on the internets semi-anonymously about it. Uhm, right?

Lots of factors apply. I readily blame Personal confidence/willpower issues, the FDA, (poorly) engineered food, government subsidies/lobbyists, unregulated capitalism that's spun out of control into boldfaced GREED, a de-emphasis on good exercise here ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/matthews/273052/ ), the world's most unneccessary ingredient- HFCS, role-modelling from celebrities (Oprah, Drew Carey, Horatio Sanz) as well as parents & peers, and mcdonald's french fries that have SUGAR in the recipe - but I also cannot deny that our nation's overdependance on pharmaceuticals plays a role too: look how many drugs a) must be taken with food and b) incite hunger and c) cause swelling around the midsection (steroids, decadron, I'm looking at you).

So do something with your disgust, Dave. Turn it into action. The FFFF (fast food fat family) isn't going to change how americans average out just because you shot them the evil eye.

I teach kids to be active, I take aikido and encourage children to take it up, I buy organic and direct-from-farmer veggies/fruits to provide my own micro version of a subsidy, I avoid buying HFCS products, I avoid the pharms, I write my senators and ask them to change the rewards for corn, and I role model will-power and confidence at every opportunity. Please: Get into the fight and do the good work.

There exists an evolutionary benefit in some situations to having extra body fat, and the alleles of the fat genes have been passed on for generations, especially in Hawai'i, and this is why you have fat people still today. It's not what they eat. I wish people would grow-up and let fat people eat in peace like the rest of the world. Then again I concede that the molecular bio is too hard for most people to grasp. It's so much easier to blame the food, isn't it?

    Because of many reasons:
    1. The FDA approves many foods that it should not approve. A lot of our food has nasty chemicals in it.

    2. The food with the most chemicals in it and that (often) tastes better then healthy food, is the cheapest. Unfortunatly, that is what most poorer people can afford.

    3. There is a large amount of junk food available.

What we eat is certainly part of the equation, but how much   we eat is the biggest culprit. Portion sizes in the US are gigantic compared with other countries, and have increased dramatically in the last few decades. Even Americans who don't eat fast food are overweight.

Take this rather benign and non-fattening bagel as an example:

I think ever-increasing portion sizes are a predictable biproduct of capitalism and consumerism.

Snarky Answer #1: To annoy you. They told me.

Snarky Answer #2:Maybe hanging out at fast food restaurants is a bad hobby for you.

Seriously, I bus and walk more than I drive, but I don't spend enough time to worry about it for it to disgust me when I see the cars on I5. I don't eat factory farm meat, but I'm not going to fret over what's in my coworker's lunches.

This is a nonproductive question. If you want a productive one, then how about "why do people choose fast food?" or "is there something in processed food that impacts weight gain?" or whatever. Another good question would be "why do I care so much what people I don't know are eating?"
