OOOOHHHHHH MY Captain! Your mind works in mysterious ways! And now I can never UNSEE that!!! lol

Wait, upside down and the blue part? You mean it looks a little phallic? Haha nice.... Or was it something else?

The short answer thy soundslikepuget comes from Puget Sound (thank you captain obvious). The longer answer is that my last name is very, very common, and my full name is the exact same as a famous musician, so I'm completely ungooglable. You can google my real name and all you will see is shit about the musician.

So, I needed an internet name. I'm a saltwater kid. I think saltwater fishing is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. My brain defaults to thinking about water when my mind goes blank, so I figured I'd do something with Puget Sound. Also, I do a lot of fishing in th San Juans. Some people say they're part of Puget Sound (the state among them), other people say no. I say fuck it, it's either Puget Sound or a Sound like Puget. Also, "Puget" has become kind of a shorthand nickname for me, so it works like "yeah that sounds like (something) Puget (would say).

Plus the added benefit that I feel more comfortable talking about bending fishing rules and smuggling booze into the ballpark when in commenting under a fake name. So yeah, soundslikepuget is the name I use on here, on Slog, on twitter, on reddit and on my blog. I'm in took deep, my real name is almost irrelevant now because you can google the shit out of soundslikepuget but im pretty much impossible to look up under the name my loving parents gave me.

Wow, that was masturbatory. Thanks for asking.

Though most people would recognise your avitar as the north west corner of Washington state, I think, it is also interesting to look at it from another perspective. Flip the figure and ground, like an optical illusion, and see what the blue shapes suggest to you.

By the way, where does the name "Sounds Like Puget" come from?

I think it is actually the order of registration of a user name on the site. That, of course, doesn't exactly follow for Marty and Charles B as they are listed as members since November 26, 2008 and have the associated numbers mentioned above. They are merely telling the truth of their involvement as creators/mods and can post those dates in their profiles, but have joining numbers associated to when their profiles were created. Also we don't know what number the system started on to begin with.

There was nothing in the mention of any of those facts to discount that you (and others, Fnarf et al) have certainly been around since the very early creation date of 4/1/2009.

It doesn't bother me... just as long as Qland doesn't get a reputation for being wild, destructive or a bunch of lushes... er, let me rephrase that...

I'm not sure what the number in the URL signifies. Is that the number of entry? Or some other indication of when you joined? It's invisible to me. I'm just happy Qland is still thriving "in the wild". (Plus, I miss the gnome & mushroom theme. Sigh...)

Ha! Great musings Russ. Feel free to post a question about our 3-year anniversary. It'll be fun to see what people come up with.

You definitely get the 'Shroom for a succinct peek into the tale.
I wonder if we will ever hear more. I think Tim K would have an interesting perspective to relate. A good journalist should do a set of interviews on these events to get the story down.

I had an early morning musing thought on someone raising a big white flag from the top of the Space Needle with a single large question mark on it - that might get some attention. Maybe too large an avalanche, good movements grow under their own steam.

    Classic date!

So, April 1st is really the official birthday of Questionland.

I hope you guys really do spend some time reminiscing and recording some of the better stories and conversations about the inception process in an "official book of Qland".

So what should happen to recognize the three year birthday of Questionland this year? Thoughts? Ideas? from anyone? Maybe this deserves a new question? Should I post it?

  • Comment on O my captain's answer…
    Img_0062_small

I waited for Marty's answer but I did note the April 19,"2009" join date on your profile page.

There was a time when you could look at the profiles in order of joining following a "latest" or "oldest" beginning choice, but that went away with the latest redesign. It was handy when you wanted to see what folks had just signed up and you could then look at the latest one and see their 'number'. It was interesting to watch the numbers grow. Now you have to wait for a spammer to join and post an ad and then you can catch the latest number in the URL. You are 1264, Marty is 636, Charles B is 642. Those numbers are probably a function of the mods being very busy behind the scenes before deciding and following through with having an official onscreen presence. I am way down the line at 8962.

    Celebrations, Gatherings and Event Planning.

You can cover the happy events, birthdays, weddings, graduations, family reunions, company and club meals/parties and could also field those more somber event questions on memorials and funerals.

Before you say that such questions never arise, I had a question come to me from a friend about webcasting a memorial service and posted it on Qland. It languished and is now entombed in the list of Unanswered questions.

"Celebrations" seems like a great idea, though I don't know if we get enough questions to warrant multiple sub-categories. We do certainly get a TON of questions like, "I need a restaurant that'll take a reservation for 40 at the last minute..."

It just happens to be the industry I am in and it is huge!!! There have got to be alot of people out there (couples) who could really benefit from this category. And I'm sure you would get a ton of traffic from vendors also...in fact, this could be a really great source of feedback for couples from vendors.

    O I C....

OK that makes way more sense Russ. Now I wish I could go back and change my answer to this question. Clearly, some jerk shouldn't be able to go through and downvote everything you've ever posted on a vendetta.

I thought the limit was that one idiotic answer could only receive 3 downvotes per day.

    I stand corrected.

  • Comment on soundslikepuget's answer…
    Img_0062_small

    soundslikepuget,
Just to be clear on the parameters contained in the limit of three ...
It means one individual can only post three downvotes in a 12 hour period. It does not stop someone who posts an inappropriate answer from getting a downvote from every person who decides to do so.

It stops the person that decides they don't like one of your expressed opinions from deciding to climb through your entire history and downvote willy-nilly to punish you. I had such an event when I watched my downvote total climb with every screen refresh. I couldn't figure out where they were placing them as they skipped around - and at a rate I might add they they couldn't possibly be reading all the text involved.

The other part of the new guidelines are that someone needs to earn a positive reputation score of 30 before being able to hand out downvotes. The person that did that to me was described as not writing much at all, but periodically logging on and voting prolifically on posted content (in my case, all negative that one night).

The idea is that if you have to contribute and earn some respect in the community, then you may be less likely to just "thumbs down" others' work without some thought when you obtain that ability.

Ultimately, I read a comment questioning whether it really adds to the discussion, poses a valuable alternative, or just perhaps is it an opportunity for the individual to hear themselves talk. Often when the comment is dismissive, snarky, or sarcastic the intent is fairly clear - especially when it doesn't relate strongly to the original question or is added on to a question/answer from 6 months ago.

I guess we could all be judged as falling into that category here.

Or am I misunderstanding you here?

  • Comment on Basil's answer…
    Bierce1_small

"disruptive assholes are part of the real community too."

What a silly statement. "Disruptive" people have no interest in the betterment of any community or social grouping. Otherwise, they wouldn't be "disruptive".

Smug, snarky, sarcastic, sure. But "disruptive" has a very specific meaning, that someone is not capable of being constructive and useful in any possible way.
