I've had great luck with jade plants. I've forgotten mine for months at a time and it's still a beautiful succulent. Very hardy.

Silk ones?

Hoya and Pothos. Virtually immortal, don't seem to need light of any particular kind or water most of the time. Water 2x/month? Pothos would probably like it once a week but it won't kill it to go longer, stuff comes back from the dead. They are both drapey climbers and grow like gangbusters if they are even slightly taken care of. If you get plants from Home Depot I believe they still have a one year return policy, you can bring back the dead ones and they'll give you a new one. You didn't used to need the receipt, you could just yank a nice dead tree out of your yard and exchange it.

Plastic ones.

Just make sure to dust frequently.

One a special note, if you live in a high traffic area (automobiles) and there is little distance between you and the street, there is a strange mold that likes to grow on plants, it could be a downtown thing, so you may need something for that. Ask at the garden center, they'll know what you may need, but if you see an orange looking mold near the base of the plant, act quickly, it will kill the plants very fast.

I live in a cold, damp, dark apartment, and I've had good luck with Danish ivy and peperomia. My jade plants also seem to withstand the cold and damp quite well (as in, they're mold-resistant), although they need a good dose of light in the summer months in order to thrive.

It's important not to overwater house plants, especially in the winter when the plant isn't sucking up a lot of water. Overwatering encourages mold and can cause root rot. Let the soil get mostly dry (all the way through, not just on the surface) before you water it again.

I definitely agree with Russ about Sanseveria - it seems to be able to grow under the worst imaginable conditions of neglect and lack of light.

I also really like peace lilies. They're poisonous though, so don't get one if you have pets who like to eat plants. One nice thing about peace lilies is that they very noticeably wilt when it comes time to water them.

i bought a shiitake farm from these guys, and it was SO AWESOME. i didn't get a bumper crop, but i did get about four pounds of GIANTS spread out over four weeks.  super delicious and amazing.  

i bought it in person and brought it back on the plane, but their turnover is high so i bet spores on even mail-ordered logs are fresh.  the sheet it comes with says it would sustain itself for about a month or two, and they're right - it died after six weeks.  if that thing really is chock full of nothing but oak chips, manure and spores, think how great it would be to break one of those apart on top of a homemade pile of oak chips and manure!  you'd be able to grow for YEARS!!  i'm gonna try that next.  maybe not in my basement, though.

CARNIVORES!  i highly recommend a carnivorous plant. but they're little.  get a whole herd of carnivorous plants and put em together in a big shallow water-filled pot.

they don't need lots of sun, they don't need lots of care, and even though lots of people say they're tricky to grow, you really can't fail if you do two things: keep its roots half-submerged and don't take it out of the pot you bought it in unless you're feeling lucky.  that soil is precious and magically acidic.  also, don't ever fertilize it or you'll stop getting colorful, bug-trapping foliage.

swanson's is a good place to get these guys.  they're expensive, but six dollars for the coolest plant you've ever had PLUS bug control is pretty great.  go get a pretty hole-less pot to set the little guy, plastic pot and all, in - there's a sale right now!

FERNS!  if you don't get a carnivorous little pet, i'd suggest a fern - japanese painted ferns are crazy gorgeous - or perhaps a peace lily.  i've always thought those are ordinary, but maybe you like them.  swanson's and city peoples have decent sized indoor plant sections - go wander around and look at tags until you find a good friend.  better yet, go to the palm room.  its like plant porn in there.  

TERRARIUMS! if its drafty, some plants will start to panic.  you're already giving them very little light, so very little light plus lots of environmental changes isn't very condusive to lots of growth.  maybe a giant terrarium would work well for you - an extra wall of glass helps to keep humidity and temperature stable.  

terrariums are crazy expensive, but not if you build them yourself.  ikea sells giant, 3 foot tall glass tumbler-vases, and places like fiore in ballard have made these into big ol terrariums.  they're gorgeous and easy.  follow some instructions and you've got a lovely stable ecosystem.  

Assuming the poor plant will survive the change and move, the easy poor-college-kid way to hang a plant near the ceiling without drilling is to use a long curtain rod with "hook" shapes on the end, and stand the rod upright in a corner. Secure the rod at the bottom with a weight (carpet) or tape (hardwood). Hang the plant from the top of this (this is why a hook shape or those little swirl-balls of metal, work best), and voila! no damage to the apartment/dorm/whatever.

Aside: How exactly are your walls ANGLED, by the way? Mine are pretty much at 90 degrees... (like most??) ;)
