  • Is there an official Questionland birthday?
    Photo_small

O My Captain is correct that he joined Questionland shortly after it was released in April of 2009.

In January of 2009, 3 guys from a fledgling Seattle based technology company approached Tim Keck of The Stranger to see if he wanted to use their technology on his website. Well, he didn't really like what they were selling but he really did like the 3 guys and they made him really delicious coffee so he decided to hang out with them for a few hours and see if they could come up with something that he did like. That day, Questionland was born as the place Seattlite's would go to ask all their difficult questions like "Where can I find a good plumber?" or "Who's got a good selection of women's boots?" or "Where can I get a good Falafel in this town?".

While the 3 technology guys were building Questionland, Tim and his colleague Anthony set to working on Questionland's style and character which they described as a "Broken Down Theme Park". Enter the Mushroom and Gnome. Discovered from the last page of Google images, cleaned up, and given center stage of Questionland.com.

On April 1st, 2009, Questionland.theStranger.com was born and took off wildly. About a year later, Questionland took on a new home at Questionland.com and a new "woodsy" design. Then, in October of 2011, Questionland decided to take itself a little more seriously, moved the Mushroom and Gnome from the front office to the back and redesigned with a cleaner, more polished look and feel. The rest, as they say, is history.

  • Why do people on questionland get so pissed about hunting and fishing and cutting down trees?
    Dscn0421_small

I think that people who hunt and fish and cut down trees in order to sustain themselves* are probably living a more environmentally sound lifestyle than people who eat meals mostly bought at the supermarket or restaurants, even those who are eating vegan or vegetarian meals bought in those places. And as for everybody else, my experience is that someone who is actually providing himself (or a whole family) with meat is eating a lot less of it than the average city omnivore. As long as you are actually using what you're taking from the natural world and not just killing stuff for the hell of it and practicing sustainable hunting/harvesting, I say go for it. (Of course, I spent the first six years of my life in a cabin without running water or electricity in the woods of North Idaho, making almost no environmental footprint whatsoever, so I *could* be an idiot who knows nothing about ethics in the modern world.)

*All comments null and void if you live in the city with no garden, drive a huge SUV to work and Starbucks, take 4-wheelers into the national forest, and are into hunting and cutting down trees because it makes you feel more capable/manly than everybody else.

  • How often is Q-land Happy Hour?
    Messy_hair_small

We will have the next one sometime in July. I still need to plan it.

This last one was focussed on the book club, so it was a pretty small bookish turn-out. The next one will be just a regular meet-up, and later in the day. (We heard from a few people that 5:30-7:30 was too early.)

Do you have suggestions for where you would like to hold a Questionland meet up?

How do people feel about a picnic outdoors?

Be sure to read the skyboxes at the top of the site. That's where we've been putting announcements about the special experts for the week, meet-ups etc. Also, if you Like us on Facebook you'll get announcements there.

I hope to meet you soon lilmonster206.

  • Can we add a rideshare section to the Questionland classifieds?
    Messy_hair_small

    I LOVE that idea.
Rideshares fits perfectly with Questionland, because of the trust issue, as you say.

I will speak with the Gnome about this. And I will use my formidable powers to make it happen.

Thanks so much for suggesting it, and keep on chugging that Kool Aid. It's sweet isn't it?

  • Who made the art for Questionland?
    Michiko_small

Hi Kristin, I am the designer responsible for the art on Questionland. I am happy that you love it :)

OOOOHHHHHH MY Captain! Your mind works in mysterious ways! And now I can never UNSEE that!!! lol

Wait, upside down and the blue part? You mean it looks a little phallic? Haha nice.... Or was it something else?

The short answer thy soundslikepuget comes from Puget Sound (thank you captain obvious). The longer answer is that my last name is very, very common, and my full name is the exact same as a famous musician, so I'm completely ungooglable. You can google my real name and all you will see is shit about the musician.

So, I needed an internet name. I'm a saltwater kid. I think saltwater fishing is the most fun you can have with your clothes on. My brain defaults to thinking about water when my mind goes blank, so I figured I'd do something with Puget Sound. Also, I do a lot of fishing in th San Juans. Some people say they're part of Puget Sound (the state among them), other people say no. I say fuck it, it's either Puget Sound or a Sound like Puget. Also, "Puget" has become kind of a shorthand nickname for me, so it works like "yeah that sounds like (something) Puget (would say).

Plus the added benefit that I feel more comfortable talking about bending fishing rules and smuggling booze into the ballpark when in commenting under a fake name. So yeah, soundslikepuget is the name I use on here, on Slog, on twitter, on reddit and on my blog. I'm in took deep, my real name is almost irrelevant now because you can google the shit out of soundslikepuget but im pretty much impossible to look up under the name my loving parents gave me.

Wow, that was masturbatory. Thanks for asking.

Though most people would recognise your avitar as the north west corner of Washington state, I think, it is also interesting to look at it from another perspective. Flip the figure and ground, like an optical illusion, and see what the blue shapes suggest to you.

By the way, where does the name "Sounds Like Puget" come from?

I think it is actually the order of registration of a user name on the site. That, of course, doesn't exactly follow for Marty and Charles B as they are listed as members since November 26, 2008 and have the associated numbers mentioned above. They are merely telling the truth of their involvement as creators/mods and can post those dates in their profiles, but have joining numbers associated to when their profiles were created. Also we don't know what number the system started on to begin with.

There was nothing in the mention of any of those facts to discount that you (and others, Fnarf et al) have certainly been around since the very early creation date of 4/1/2009.

I'm not sure what the number in the URL signifies. Is that the number of entry? Or some other indication of when you joined? It's invisible to me. I'm just happy Qland is still thriving "in the wild". (Plus, I miss the gnome & mushroom theme. Sigh...)

You definitely get the 'Shroom for a succinct peek into the tale.
I wonder if we will ever hear more. I think Tim K would have an interesting perspective to relate. A good journalist should do a set of interviews on these events to get the story down.

I had an early morning musing thought on someone raising a big white flag from the top of the Space Needle with a single large question mark on it - that might get some attention. Maybe too large an avalanche, good movements grow under their own steam.

    Classic date!

So, April 1st is really the official birthday of Questionland.

I hope you guys really do spend some time reminiscing and recording some of the better stories and conversations about the inception process in an "official book of Qland".

So what should happen to recognize the three year birthday of Questionland this year? Thoughts? Ideas? from anyone? Maybe this deserves a new question? Should I post it?

  • Comment on O my captain's answer…
    Qlandav2ex_small

I waited for Marty's answer but I did note the April 19,"2009" join date on your profile page.

There was a time when you could look at the profiles in order of joining following a "latest" or "oldest" beginning choice, but that went away with the latest redesign. It was handy when you wanted to see what folks had just signed up and you could then look at the latest one and see their 'number'. It was interesting to watch the numbers grow. Now you have to wait for a spammer to join and post an ad and then you can catch the latest number in the URL. You are 1264, Marty is 636, Charles B is 642. Those numbers are probably a function of the mods being very busy behind the scenes before deciding and following through with having an official onscreen presence. I am way down the line at 8962.

    Celebrations, Gatherings and Event Planning.

You can cover the happy events, birthdays, weddings, graduations, family reunions, company and club meals/parties and could also field those more somber event questions on memorials and funerals.

Before you say that such questions never arise, I had a question come to me from a friend about webcasting a memorial service and posted it on Qland. It languished and is now entombed in the list of Unanswered questions.

"Celebrations" seems like a great idea, though I don't know if we get enough questions to warrant multiple sub-categories. We do certainly get a TON of questions like, "I need a restaurant that'll take a reservation for 40 at the last minute..."

It just happens to be the industry I am in and it is huge!!! There have got to be alot of people out there (couples) who could really benefit from this category. And I'm sure you would get a ton of traffic from vendors also...in fact, this could be a really great source of feedback for couples from vendors.

Didn't it used to be true that you could not only vote for yourself, but that you could vote multiple times every time you visited a page? (This is where you figure out what portion of my up votes are, well, mine.)

  • Comment on Marty Unger's answer…
    Photo_small

Only one vote counts even though it may look like you're voting again, the count resets after a refresh as you discovered. This wasn't intentional in the beginning but we decided to leave it that way.

  • Comment on Marty Unger's answer…
    Labcoat_small

Additionally, I've noticed that after some fairly brief amount of time, you can re-vote on the same question/comment/etc.

    Is that by design?

    -Edit-
I just noticed that I can re-vote after a refresh. Surely that is a bug, right?

    -Edit 2-
Actually, a second refresh does reset the 'thumbs counter' back to where it should be. Still, I'm almost certain I have been able to vote multiple times after a time delay. Perhaps I am crazy.

I'm always down for the Unicorn but...anywhere with a patio would be really fun.
I would totally be down for a picnic. My favorite sunning spot right now is the Fake Grass at Cal-Anderson. I am, unfortunately, very allergic to real grass.
