  • I need a primer on this concept of 'Following' on the new QuestionLand.
    Photo_small

Here's a breakdown of the Follow feature. I believe that there is a bug that is responsible for the double notifications which I am looking into:

    Notifications
Follow categories to be notified of new questions in the category.
Follow questions to be notified of new answers and comments in the question.
Follow people to be notified of new questions and answers by the person (not comments).

    Auto-Follow
Answering a question or commenting on an answer will automatically "Follow" that question. You can always "Unfollow" the question to stop getting notified.

    Follow Counts
The number next to the "Follow" is the how many people are following the particular item. We only show the number when it's more than 1. The green "F" icon in your reputation is the number of people that are following your questions since you get reputation points for these. See the reputation help page for more info on this.

    Bug
You should only receive one notification per post (e.g. If you're following both Fnarf and a question that Fnarf answers, you should only receive his answer in one email notification. This is the bug I'm looking into.)

Let me know if this makes sense and if you have any other questions.
    Thanks, Marty

Thanks for catching that. It's a bug. I will inform the Gnome and see if I can get rid of them manually in the meanwhile.

  • When QL removes (censors) a Question, why doesn't it also remove the associated Reputation scoring? That's less than fair practice.
    555_pinout_small

We rarely have to censor anything and only do it when the contribution is offensive, spam, obviously useless or some combination thereof.

The reason we don't remove the associated reputation score is because the votes on the contribution are a reflection of people's view of that person's contribution to the community. If we removed the negative scores then we would be giving an inaccurate view of that the way that person is perceived.

It's not hard to negate a negative score by asking good questions and giving good answers. People are generally loathe to down-vote other people.

We monitor the voting to ensure that no one is arbitrarily voting down people they disagree with and will remove those if they occur. Otherwise a vote is a contribution just like an answer and we don't remove content unless it is necessary.

Thanks for asking. Hope that makes sense.

  • Update to Q-land mobile apps?
    555_pinout_small

    Mister Fusspot,

Thanks for the feedback. It's much appreciated.

    1. Back Button.
It's at the top of our list.

    2. Scrolling in box
On many phones if you use two fingers to scroll it'll work. Not intuitive (strange standard) and we need to create an alternative.

Our other biggie is to ad pictures! You got a camera in your pocket after all.

We are stretched v. thin and so it's going to take a while (unfortunately). We really don't want to charge for the app although we appreciate your willingness to pay for it.

    Thanks again.

  • How about requiring someone registering to participate here to post a photo or avatar?
    555_pinout_small

    Hi Russ,

It turns out that a bunch of those so spammers post pictures as well. They are quite adept at sign-ups and typically are paid to do whatever it takes.

We are looking at various spam control methods as the amount increases. The important thing is that we don't cause our real community trouble in the process.

I'd talk about the methods we are planning, but if I did it would only make it easier to circumvent.

One of the reasons we get spammers (beyond being a popular site) is that they are under the misapprehension that posting their links here will be of some benefit to them. They are "no-follow" links which means that they won't be.

Thanks for the idea though and please if you have any others feel free to share because we are always looking for creative solutions to this kind of problem.

  • 'for-Qland's-next-update' suggestion: Could we have a way to search/organize the top contributor's various stats?
    555_pinout_small

    Rev,

    Nice demo of the OCD.

I know the Gnome has things planned for minor refinement to the reputation system. The main one being to easily see the "stats" in terms of the last week/month rather than being limited to "all time".

I will suggest that he introduce other sorting filters (perhaps under an OCD tab) so that you (and only you?) could perform some more detailed analysis.

Keep in mind that we intentionally implemented a very simple reputation system in the belief that over-engineering it was of limited benefit and would potentially cause more confusion than value.

Thankfully, we are a close enough community that we intuitively know quite a bit about who is best at what regardless of what the numbers may say. I personally pay almost no attention to them.

The Gnome is hard at work at some very interesting and useful new additions (most prominently QL Mobile) and once he has moved on from that I'll see if he is open to reputation enhancements.

Thanks as always for your ongoing ideas, suggestions and participation. I'll still like you even when you get to a hundred shrooms.

Anytime that I have made a typo that severely affects the question or the answer, the good people at Questionland have been very good to me and corrected it without question. We're talking a mistyped date, or a dropped word, something like that. Not sure if it's the gnome that lives under the bridge, or just the administrative staff, but they're always nice and responsive.

    O I C....

OK that makes way more sense Russ. Now I wish I could go back and change my answer to this question. Clearly, some jerk shouldn't be able to go through and downvote everything you've ever posted on a vendetta.

I thought the limit was that one idiotic answer could only receive 3 downvotes per day.

    I stand corrected.

  • Comment on soundslikepuget's answer…
    Qlandav2ex_small

    soundslikepuget,
Just to be clear on the parameters contained in the limit of three ...
It means one individual can only post three downvotes in a 12 hour period. It does not stop someone who posts an inappropriate answer from getting a downvote from every person who decides to do so.

It stops the person that decides they don't like one of your expressed opinions from deciding to climb through your entire history and downvote willy-nilly to punish you. I had such an event when I watched my downvote total climb with every screen refresh. I couldn't figure out where they were placing them as they skipped around - and at a rate I might add they they couldn't possibly be reading all the text involved.

The other part of the new guidelines are that someone needs to earn a positive reputation score of 30 before being able to hand out downvotes. The person that did that to me was described as not writing much at all, but periodically logging on and voting prolifically on posted content (in my case, all negative that one night).

The idea is that if you have to contribute and earn some respect in the community, then you may be less likely to just "thumbs down" others' work without some thought when you obtain that ability.

  • Comment on Basil's answer…
    Qlandav2ex_small

Ultimately, I read a comment questioning whether it really adds to the discussion, poses a valuable alternative, or just perhaps is it an opportunity for the individual to hear themselves talk. Often when the comment is dismissive, snarky, or sarcastic the intent is fairly clear - especially when it doesn't relate strongly to the original question or is added on to a question/answer from 6 months ago.

I guess we could all be judged as falling into that category here.

Or am I misunderstanding you here?

"disruptive assholes are part of the real community too."

What a silly statement. "Disruptive" people have no interest in the betterment of any community or social grouping. Otherwise, they wouldn't be "disruptive".

Smug, snarky, sarcastic, sure. But "disruptive" has a very specific meaning, that someone is not capable of being constructive and useful in any possible way.

I do understand the reasoning behind the new emphasis on answers, and Russ your comments are great. Still, without questions there would be no answers, and I feel like the current layout minimizes questions too much.

Charles, your suggestion might work. Another solution might be to have Questions and Answers tabs on the top nav. That way users could look at one feed or the other if they so desire.

  • Comment on e.strange's answer…
    555_pinout_small

Thanks for the updated feedback. The experience changes with time and so this later feedback is perhaps even more relevant than the initial impressions.

I think Russ did a great job of explaining the benefits of the current approach - thanks for that.

That said, it is still not ideal for people who are more question focused. I've been chatting with the Gnome about ways to address that. Perhaps something as simple as switching the q's with a's but leaving the relative sizes the same.

Thanks for letting us know. We'll keep working on it.

  • Comment on e.strange's answer…
    Qlandav2ex_small

I have accepted the layout by realizing how it works quite effectively.

There are always more answers than questions so this highlights the more plentiful category in the prime real estate of the page. The questions are there to the right so you can see the latest to be added at the top.

I noted your new answer to a relatively older question because it was right there in the largest font at the top of the list. In the older system I would not have been aware of it unless I went down the page and scanned the latest posts. This way anyone coming back to the site can look directly at what has been added since last visit. It does however, show how folks operate in spurts of coming to the site and then answering lots of questions in succession.

Hovering on either question or answer reveals extra content that is helpful in reminding the reader about the background of the posting.

Ultimately, as a resource, people come to the forum for the answers - hence being the featured list.

That is just about a 50% reduction (average of the previous 22 months = 15.6%).

I remember your statement to me about the person that loaded 20 downvotes on me in about a half and hour saying that they don't contribute much, but log on periodically and do a lot of voting. Now someone has to actually participate and earn some recognition and even then they can't just climb through your history and dump on you continually. If it hadn't happened to me, then I wouldn't even had thought about that part of it.

Thanks for taking the time to develop the stats.

As we approach the one month anniversary of the new Qland design I am wondering about the use of down votes and how that has been affected.

It appears to me that the whole incidence of thumbs down votes is reduced. I assume you, the Mods, are aware of the exact statistics and could confirm if that is true or not.

Certainly not voting on questions has a big impact. But I wonder how requiring people to participate in the forum and earning a positive reputation to a certain level before being able to downvote and limiting downvoting per time period has affected that.

"I am not a tech expert, but I do think it's a possibility that someone slipped malware onto the Slog server."

This happens, but isn't as common as malware purveyors sneaking their "ads" into legitimate advertising channels/networks. Slog isn't compromised, google isn't compromised, but they don't manually scan every advert that comes their way, and malware often gets past their automated scan.
