  • Is John Byrne still considered the fan favorite among comic book artists?

Not really. I think Byrne's reputation these days is as a bitter man who once produced loads of popular comics and sort of burned himself out.

I was a big, big fan of his during the X-Men/Alpha Flight/Fantastic Four days--there's a great Fantastic Four issue drawn sideways (issue 252, if my geek memory serves me)--but around that time he was writing AND drawing four books a month. Which is insane.

More than anything, I think his style just got a little stale, and he didn't change with the times, so fans sort of left him behind, though he does still have a devoted cadre of followers.

  • Where do we find the best collection of Modesty Blaze newspaper adventures?

She was actually Modesty Blaise, not Blaze, which might be why you're having trouble finding her. I've never seen the strip; it was British, not American, though it was distributed here at times. I remember her from the terrific camp spy thriller starring Monica Vitti in the title role; you should rent and watch it.

It was drawn by Jim Holdaway from inception in 1963 to 1970; then by Enrique Badia Romero until '78, then a series of others.

According to the Wikipedia page, many of the strips have been reprinted in books. I haven't looked to see how available the early reprints are, but the most recent reprints on Titan Press are widely available on Amazon, Abebooks, and various other sites for pretty cheap -- volume 1, "The Gabriel Set-up" can be had for as little as $4.79 plus shipping. However, there are twenty books in the series (which is still ongoing)!

The Wikipedia page is astoundingly complete, with complete list of story lines and which books they were reprinted in: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modesty_Blaise

An Addall book search for the first volume is here.

The books don't appear to be in either the SPL or KCL systems, but some of them are apparently in the Sno-Isle system if you have an account up there (that's Snohomish and Island Counties). You can get any of them from SPL through interlibrary loan for a fee of $5, which isn't bad considering that with the purchase option you've got to pay shipping too. ILL is a flat fee.

The ILL request page is here: http://www.spl.org/library-collection/interlibrary-loans/interlibrary-loan-request-books

I'll just add that I'm SUPER JEALOUS that this exists for Modesty Blaise and not Apartment 3-G. In fact, I think I'm going to have to check this strip out. Maybe we should coordinate our efforts and share....
