Personally, I have found that I can find most things I want to watch for free online. Two really great sites are SideReel.com and Watch-Series.com As long as you have a decent internet connection they load about as quickly as Netflix and there really isn't any hassle.

Our Daily Bread is by far the most amazing thing I have seen related to food.

No intro, no story, no dialog, no voiceover, no music -- just a stationary camera capturing the sights and sounds of everyday food production.

Some absolutely amazing shots. For some reason the sequence with the gigantic field sprinkler system that unfolds itself like some sort of extra-terrestrial being always makes me giddy.

Or the lady whose job it is to cut the feet off of dead pigs. She sits on a stool with some powered shears and just lops pigfeet off all day.

If that makes you squeamish, skip the last set of scenes where they follow a cow from the field to the meatpacking line.

Which reminds me of another great food related doc: Temple Grandin -- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1278469/

I've only used Netflix and Comcast's OnDemand for movies and I can say that Comcast is way worse, in my opinion. Maybe I'm spoiled with my lovely Tivo's fast controls, but Comcast lags quite terribly. Trying to pause or stop or fast forward are all awful. It'll eventually get done, but what a waste. Having used a friend's DVR through Comcast I found similar complaints. I feel like they've intentionally made their DVRs difficult/slow-to-respond so that you end up watching some commercials. But that's my conspiracy theory. My only real complaint with netflix streaming is that you can't put up subtitles/close captioning. But I think this is true of all the streaming companies.

Actually, I've rented a few movies through Amazon two years ago (I had some coupon codes) but these I've watched through my Tivo, so they worked fine (although the 24 hr expiration date is a bit lame. Once you hit play, it'll disappear within 24 hours so make sure you have time to finish the film).

    Good luck!

  • When, how, and for how much can I get tickets to 'Hump!' ?

The tickets availability will be announced in The Stranger and on SLOG. I highly recommend being near a computer within the hour they become available if you want to get a popular showing and buy all your tickets on one card or risk being separated from friends. You will most likely not succed on your first attempt to solicit tickets from the site but be persistent and they will be yours. This is coming from someone who has been the last three years.

This is not a specific recommendation (sorry!), but (if you're in Seattle-not sure) you should hit up Scarecrow and ask the employees. They've got wonderfully curated sections and the employees tend to be pretty knowledgeable (even when you're like "The main character is a kid with funny hair...it was made in the eighties....I think...").

I'd definitely watch both Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer.

If you like ridiculous comedies and Andy Lau, Love on a Diet is actually kind of funny. I also like Fulltime Killer and Needing You.

Hard Boiled is definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it.

Even though it's in Mandarin, I'd watch Hero if you haven't seen it.

  • What kind of guns do they use in Hollywood?

They use prop guns in Hollywood movies
There are 3 types of prop guns,

    1) Real guns loaded with blank bullets but these are less and less used because of risks linked to it and related on-set accidents and because insurance companies would not endorse a set with real guns on stage.
    2) Blank firing guns which have been modified to shoot only blank bullets (cannon are not hollow but sealed and only blank bullets filled with powder can be shot.)
    3) There is a company specialized in fake guns that stocks and warehouses in an undisclosed location all guns in sizes and makes. They weigh the same as the real gun, same material, and same color.
This company is the only company affiliated with Hollywood studios to supply props. i saw it on E once.

You may interested to peruse this site, Internet Movie Firearms DataBase (IMDB) to read about some of the particulars.

The one describing the arsenal of various weapons seen in Desperado is pretty impressive with outtake stills showing the ones described.

I remember one story about a movie where they only had funds to obtain one true machine pistol and the others were plastic and they had to shoot scenes with various takes showing different cast members firing the weapon and the others handling the fake ones. The weapon got so hot they had to cease filming periodically during the fight sequences to allow it to cool off.

Depends. Brandon Lee was killed with a real one. They use squibs(blanks) and charges for the impact. In the case of lee there was still a bullet in the chamber. Lesson? Use new guns in movies.

  • Question about the film "Audition"

on the DVD we saw, there was an audio commentary that Miike did specifically on the last 20 minutes of the film, as it was that portion that people consistently asked him about and found the most confusing. The last bit is a juxtaposition of the way the man was perceiving what the girl was saying/doing with what she was actually telling him.

The main girl turning into his son's girlfriend, to me, seems to be a reflection of the main character's subconcious guilt and unease with dating a younger woman... but I could just be over-analyzing.

The man in the bag is the manager of the Stone Fish bar the girl used to work at (which now is empty). If I remember correctly, there was a love triangle between the bar manager, the main girl character and another woman who worked at the bar. The end result was that the main girl character killed the other woman and mutilated the bar manager. His tongue and fingers were left in the bar and the girl dried and mounted his severed feet to boards --which she then gave to her crippled stepfather.

A lot of the main female character's background story is implied or told through tidbits of heresay, which can get awfully confusing.

Sometimes Miike doesn't make sense on purpose. One part symbolism. One part Surrealism. To be weird for the sake of being weird due to the eerie or detached feeling it may give the viewer. It's mood manipulation. I'm sure you've seen at least one David Lynch movie.

He might not even be able to tell you what he means in some films, without resorting to bullshit. Have you ever seen Gozu? (Not slamming it, by the way).

You should be pretty OK with Thor. There is some indication that there's some chemistry between the lead and the lady doctor, and a possible cross race kidnapping and hostage taking, but for the most part, it's all light...the violence is CGI and the heroes ultimately win.

The acting is good, they take themselves seriously, and the dilema the hero is placed it is not emotionally overwrought.

As a summer action film, it's good. It's not exactly faithful to the comic book version, but close enough. The changes they made work well.

I think I'd take the 4th grader with me, rather than turning him loose.

Want another good comic book movie that's good for adults or teens? X-Men First Class is a surprisingly good action film that paints the picture of how the X-men got going and how they pulled the Cuban Missle Crisis back from the brink.
There's no overt sex, though there are occassional nude female breasts and at least a passing adult tabletop dancing club and one person showing up in another's bed...but no action occurs... until the big fight scenes. It's very satisfying with the right hint of tragedy, pain, frustration and vengence. Oh, and there's at least two on camera killings, so be prepared or half your 4th grader prepared for Nazi's vengence and some adult themes.

  • Have any of you all seen the 1970's movie "3 Women"??? What do you think of it? Is it supposed to give you the creeps? :)

I saw it back in the 70s, Kristen. It's a very strange movie. It was my first experience with Shelley Duvall as a lead. She'd been in Thieves Like Us - also an Altman movie, also strange - but didn't figure quite so prominently in that one.

Cissy idolizes Shelly and becomes Shelley while the administration of the questionable nursing home where they work bicker about things like 5 minutes worth of pay which I thought was hilarious at the time ("Do not punch in until you are dressed for work!"). Tuna melts. Shelley thinking she's some hot shit when its obvious to everyone (except Cissy) that she is not. Janice Rule painting an empty swimming pool with Aztec-looking demons with penises. It's Altman at his strangest.

You know Shelley won best actress at Cannes and won the LA Film Critics award that year (1977), right?

I wonder if I'd understand it more now than I did then. I was 25 and lived in West Hollywood when it came out and it was on the Z Channel twice a day, all week shortly after it has its brief cinema run. I got plenty of opportunity to watch it over and over with different people. Everyone was pretty perplexed it. Some were bummed. Some laughed throughout most of the film.

It is creepy if it's creepy to you.

I tend to agree with Tom Sackett on this one; every bootleg I've seen has been disappointingly grainy. I know you asked about films specifically, but have you discovered crunchyroll.com? Lots of totally awesome anime series, streaming video-style. I've discovered a bunch of things I would have never heard of otherwise. There's a pay version, but we've found the free version to be completely adequate (we don't really mind the 1-2 brief commercials per episode).

Leaving aside the legal (and moral) issues, some of these movies are beautiful, and I don't think bootleg internet downloads are going to match the quality of a DVD. Some torrents might come close, but you're not going to find regular downloads or streaming video of decent quality.

Libraries, in Seattle at least, seem to have a lot of anime on DVD these days. Your profile suggests that you live in Alaska, which could make it harder, but you might be able to use free inter-library loans that would get the films to your local library.

I think it would be fine. There's nothing really sexual or otherwise profane in it. The violence is pretty cartoonish, befitting a movie based on a comic book. I'd take a 9-year-old to it, but I'm pretty liberal about what I'd let kids watch.
