  • Body cleanse?

I did a cleanse a while back from The Herbalist and loved it SO much. I've been wanting to do another but keep putting it off. I did a pretty in-depth write up of my experience on my blog (http://www.areyoumyghost.com/2010/04/week-long-cleanse-breakdown.html)

  • How can I prevent e.coli in my home grown sprouts?
    Qlandav2ex_small

The sources of E. coli would be from the blood or juices of uncooked meat. As long as you are obtaining fresh seeds and beans and soaking them in fresh water and not exposing them to unclean vessels you have kept raw meat in you have nothing to worry about.

If you want to control for any stray mold or fungus that can grow on damp sprouts you can always rinse them in some apple cider vinegar before eating them (preferably raw unfiltered organic with the 'mother'). That will also give some extra great taste to your salad or other preparation.

Well "cleanse" kind of includes a wide array of things. There are cleanses that involve spiritual components. There are enemas to cleanse the colon. There are homeopathic cleanses which cleanse...well they just claim to cleanse "toxins" which is kind of a bogus term in itself. Then there are diet cleanses which are as diverse as fad diets and are pretty ambiguous in what they are supposed to do.

Netipots are used to cleanse the sinuses of pollen and allergens and are pretty much a saline rinse. I've used saline rinses to positive affect myself. You don't need to spend extra money for any of the herbal supplements that are sometimes used with them, though. It's really just the salt and water that do the trick.

I'm not sure if I want to do one, or cleanse anything. I was just wondering what people's experiences were with them in general.

I just googled my ingredients to double-check that they're gluten-free. Apparently most wine is gluten-free, but some people with Celiac's still have reactions to some wines. So maybe skip the cooking wine. Pure spices (like the ones I listed) are safe; seasoning packets sometimes have wheat added - so check the label on those.

That watermelon salad looks yummy, but bulgar wheat is not gluten free! Neither is hoisin sauce (or soy sauce for that matter), unless the bottle specifies that it's wheat-free. GF people need to avoid wheat, rye, and barley. A list of ingredients to avoid: http://www.celiacdisease.net/gluten-free-diet

"Are you going full-on gluten free, or just partway?"

Sounds like they're doing it "for health" and not for any allergy reasons.

Season! I found that helped my salads so maybe it'll help you. People also tend to think of salads as raw, but you can cook ingredients to add some extra flavour.

Salads are always so good when other people make them, and so terrible when I make them. I need to work on that I think. Thanks!

Oh, and there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to fear that E.coli is on the seeds themselves. Nothing dangerous is there and if there was, it wouldn't survive underground.

While all dangerous bacteria are really good at living inside of us, nearly all of them are terrible at living outside.

Apples from last falls harvest are kept in CA (Controlled Atmosphere)storage which stops the ripening process. That is why they are available fresh year round.

Top Banana has been open year round for a while now, something to do with the crappy economy.

Thanks. I always think of Apples as a fall thing, but people seem to refer to them as being "in season" all year 'round. Odd. I'll check out the places you suggested.

Yeah, I was going to mention Teapot because it is vegetarian... but I've never liked the food, it reminds me of some grim 1970s American conception of Chinese food before we had any idea what it was actually like.

Yeah, "kosher style" really just means "similar foods." It's not guaranteed to be kosher or even use kosher ingredients.

In order for an establishment to be kosher, it has to have someone on site who knows all the kosher laws, who makes sure they are followed. That's what "supervised" means in this case. I know it seems silly Ted, but when you are keeping kosher, you have to look out for things like "kosher style" so you don't end up eating something treif (non-kosher). It's easy for someone who is just making matzah ball soup to add dairy to the broth without thinking, or cheese to a meat sandwich.

Take heart, if he was a real stickler, like someone who was Ultra-Orthodox, he would never eat outside of his own home, our the homes of people in his own community, who go to synagogue with him!

I'm with you! Normally I'd rather take a bath face down that eat vegan.

Turns out that we had to bring Bamboo G to the office anyway because it's practically the only legit kosher place in town. It was pretty gross and the office smelled like butt for the rest of the day.

    Thanks for your answer!

We were actually going to check this place out but then our business client emailed to say that the New York Deli is not "kosher supervised". Whatever that means. What a hardass!

But thanks for the great suggestion. I plan to check it out on my own sometime!

Look up Jewish bakeries in your town. Keep in mind that they sell Challahs for most jews buying them for Friday night Shabbat Dinner. Buy your Challah pre-Friday evening. They may not have them on Saturday because its a long way away to the next Friday.
