Are you familiar with Larabars? They're generally made with two ingredients- dates and nuts. Often with added spices or fruit to mix up the flavors. Homemade granola bars are also super easy. If you don't already make your own granola- I just posted my favorite recipe on the Swallowing Seattle blog- you can skip all of the complicated steps (pralines, clusters) and just make straight granola. I've made mine stick together by making a mixture of peanut butter and honey and mixing in granola until stiff and able to form bars. They also freeze really well.

I've seen a lot of bars coming out lately that use brown rice syrup to hold them together- I haven't experimented with it myself but it's definitely worth a shot. Bumble Bars are made primarily of brown rice syrup and sesame seeds and are totally delicious.

They are one hell of a tasty weed, that unfortunately doesn't grown on our side of the country. I know Jeremy from Foraged & Found makes a special trip to pick them during the spring so they do pop up at the farmers markets here. Christina of Nettletown gave me a bunch last spring to play with and I fell crazy in love.

They are garlicy and oniony and will give you awful breath and seep out of your pores for days. And it's totally worth it.

I've used the white part + stem in place of garlic and onions in many dishes, and cooked the greens as I would spinach or kale.

I started off making my own granola and while I do love it- it's really time consuming and not really all that cost effective compared to the store bought stuff. I've been trying to cut down on over-priced over-sugared over-processed store bought foods, and cereal has been the hardest for me. I had seen a recipe for popped amaranth cereal about a year ago and just started thinking about it again. It's crazy easy, a lot of fun, and incredibly cost effective. Plus I love the taste and texture. Truly it's pretty random. I read a lot of blogs and have some pretty creative friends. When I run into an idea that I find interesting I tend to start researching it as much as possible. I often end up making blog posts entirely dedicated to some of the resources that I've found. When it comes down to actually making and doing- it's often dictated by what ingredients I have on hand or whatever project I find extra appealing at that moment. Sometimes I'll read a recipe that I have to make RIGHT NOW and other times they get starred in Google Reader or added to a "link love" post on my blog, and I come back to them later.

If you're having a hard time choosing something- make a list of the projects you're interested in. Take into account how much money, time, and space you'll need to accomplish each the projects on your list and go from there.

I've been intrigued by making pasta but haven't had much of a push (my boyfriend works in an Italian restaurant so it's hard to get him very excited about it). I'll do a little research and see about getting a post up soon! I'm sure I can find some people willing to eat my experiments.

Seed bombs are a delightful little mixture of soil, clay and water (basically some serious high quality mud that dries hard) with a variety of seeds mixed in. They're used for "guerrilla gardening" aka- planting things where you either don't have access or where you normally wouldn't see things growing. They're perfect for empty lots, abandoned construction sites, and really anywhere at all with a little bit of unloved dirt. They're shaped into balls so that they're easier to throw over fences and other obstructions.

There's no real property size requirement for bombing- the only trick is throwing your bomb so that it actually lands on a patch of dirt, rather than pavement or gravel.

Since often times seed bombs are thrown where there isn't easy access- they are mostly made up of flower seeds, rather than edibles. If bombing in an area that is easy to access and you want to try some edibles- herbs, edible flowers, lettuces, and anything with a shallow root system should stand a fighting chance.

Oh! And it's definitely not too late in the season. We were making them in May of last year and probably could have pushed into June.
