You've gotta tweak his nipples or he just can't get off.

  • How do I explain atheism to my young children?
    Basicdnd_small

Kids already understand atheism, it's the theisms that are hard to explain.

I always talk about the mythologies, Greek mythology, Christian mythology, Buddhist mythology, etc... Explaining Jesus is just like explaining Zeus.

  • Should I read The Pale King?
    Basicdnd_small

I just finished it and I can't answer your question. I can give you a couple impressions:

It's challenging and funny and clearly unfinished. It had some stretches of absolutely perfect prose. Unlike Infinite Jest I didn't feel like I had received the complete package when I finished the book. It was a little frustrating, but I figured I'd be somewhat letdown.

  • What are some good books about anarchism?
    Basicdnd_small

"My Life" by Emma Goldman is a nice readable book by one feminist anarchist.

  • Are we too lax with our children?
    Basicdnd_small

I often find that the most obnoxious and disruptive children I deal with are the one's who's parents are more "traditional" in their discipline. Living with rules that are set without explanation and enforced with violence or deprivation makes for a kid who tries to set rules with their peers using violence.

My parents were hippies, so I'm on the second generation of non-violent parenting. I remember my aunts being amazed by how polite my siblings and I were when we were kids, while their kids were fucking assholes most of the time. My own daughter uses please and thank you most of the time (she's not perfect, of course). She doesn't automatically obey an adult, she expects rules to be explained and will debate a rule endlessly. That makes me proud.

  • InStep Quick N EZ Double Bicycle Trailer: Is this a good Bike Trailer for hauling a kid?
    Basicdnd_small

I had an InStep trailer which I used for 3 years (daughter's second, third, and fourth years of life). It worked. It was pretty beat after being used many times a week in all weather, but I think the safety and durability were better than I expected from the bottom of the market offering. The double size is great because you can carry a stuff alongside the kid.

  • Anyone know where to find fashionable bike helmets?
    Basicdnd_small

You're doing it all wrong. You don't need a helmet because you don't need to actually ride the bike up and down Broadway. You WALK your fixie around.

"Well, I am an occultist and a magick arts student. "

    So you're a crazy idiot.

"I read about 400 per year, isn't that enough lol? "

Not enough for you to have learned how to write a coherent sentence. For example:

"I think people should read as much as they can instead of reading mainstream books (those that are all fiction.) so than maybe Earth will be a better place."

Reading as much as you can doesn't prohibit reading non-mainstream books. Perhaps you left out a word? Mainstream books are not all fiction, they are merely widely read. "Than" does not mean "then." The relationship between people's reading choices and the Earth becoming a better place is tenuous.

If you want some advice (which you surely don't) stop reading occult books. They're always terribly written, poorly edited, and contain either the hollow fantasies of the deluded or cold-blooded attempts to manipulate the easily deluded.

" Blinky lights are also seriously irritating to drivers. I wouldn't put a blinky even on the rear."

The point is to be noticed, and if it takes annoying the drivers, then fine. Blinking lights are MUCH more noticable, and the only reason to have a rear light is to help drivers not run over you. Plus a blinky in the rear is required by law.

I rock 120 Lumens up front and have no problem averaging 15mph on the Burke in the dark. I wouldn't want to have any less light.

  • At what age should kids be told about sex?
    Basicdnd_small

My daughter is in second grade.

We read her a pop up book on the basics of sex and reproduction when she was two. To my knowledge, she has never done anything inappropriate with other kids or adults. I suggest you start now. It doesn't matter what his friends know or don't know. He'll be a better, safer kid for know how human bodies work and reproduce themselves.

I'm not saying you should sit down and watch porn with him. Just do the facts of anatomy, reproduction, and tell him that grownups can find it very pleasurable but it's not for kids. Kids understand that grownups do things they find terribly uninteresting. Only by making it taboo will you make problems.
