  • I've got a not-good neighbor situation. Help?
    Icon_small

I mentioned this in response to a similar question a week or two ago, but: Do these neighbors own the house they live in? If not, can you contact their landlord to complain? You could possibly do it anonymously via a letter.

Many landlords hide where they really live quite well (my former landlord had her other rental property as the contact info for my building and vice versa), but you can try to find a landlord's mailing address through the King County parcel viewer: http://www.kingcounty.gov/operations/gis/propresearch/parcelviewer.aspx

Look up your neighbors' house, and then look at the property record.

  • Do you need vaccinations to visit Buenos Aires?
    Icon_small

I think it's only too late if she can't get an appointment somewhere. The UW Medical Center once got me an appointment at their travel clinic at the last minute, although that was ten years ago.

Looking at the CDC's list, the only thing that jumps out at me is typhoid. I honestly think the Hep A and Hep B recommendations are kind of ridiculous. You can get both in the U.S. too.

Malaria and Yellow Fever aren't going to be an issue if she really does stay in Buenos Aires, but it's not too late even for Malaria; you need to start taking the meds a week before exposure.

  • Why do i look fatter?

Are you doing weight training? A good weight training routine is really important to replace some of that fat you're losing with muscle.

A 14-lb weight loss is also really fast for just one month. If you're not doing weight training, I recommend you start doing that while cutting down on high intensity cardio; my totally amateur opinion is that 30 minutes of intense cardio per workout is just about right, unless you're training for a sport.

  • Camping/Campers on residential streets?
    Icon_small

Do you live in Seattle? I'm asking because in Seattle, at least, you can't park on any given block for more than three days at a time. You can use this link to report the camper anytime it's parked in a location for more than 72 hours. By law, they'll have to move the camper within three days of getting a notice to move. Unfortunately, they only have to move to another block, but, if you keep up with it enough, they might get sick of it and move on. You have to give parking enforcement the make, model, and license plate number of the vehicle, so I recommend writing that down for safekeeping.

If you don't live in Seattle, try looking up what the law is for how long a vehicle is allowed to park on the street.

How dangerous do you think those neighbors truly are? If you think their actions will stay limited to vandalism, and if reporting the camper doesn't work, maybe you could band together with your neighbors to drive the motherfuckers away. Take turns reporting every possible incident to the authorities, keep an eye on each others' property to catch vandalism in the act, and maybe even consider setting up surveillance cameras.

  • Keeping the dog after a break up
    Icon_small

I highly doubt the police are going to get involved in this; they have better things to do. Worst case scenario, your ex takes you to court, but it doesn't exactly sound like he's in a great position to hire an attorney.

If I were you, though, I would be worried that he might try to steal the dog back and would take extra precautions to make sure that didn't happen. Have you changed the locks to your place since he moved out?

If he were more reasonable and responsible about this, maybe you could work out supervised visits with the dog, but it sounds like that ship has sailed.

  • The holidays and his birthday are coming up and I don't know how/when to tell him that I don't see us being together for much longer...HELP!
    Icon_small

Chiming in to say that I agree with everyone else, but also to point out that the holidays can be a strain on even a healthy relationship. I remember seeing somewhere that divorce filings peak during/shortly after the holidays. Maybe you can hold out on breaking up with your boyfriend until after the New Year, but maybe you can't. Do you really want to risk breaking up with him on Christmas Day because you just can't stand the relationship for one minute more?

The humane thing to do is to let him down easy before all those special occasions hit. And couch your reasons in terms of the two of you being in different places in life, rather than mentioning any of the shit about him that bugs you.

  • Should I use Accutane?
    Icon_small

I've done Accutane, but I had severe cystic acne and had gone through so many acne treatment regimens that Retin-A had pretty much become a placebo.

It's pretty rough. You have to go in to the doctor once a month to take your pregnancy test and birth control/sex ed quiz (if you're a woman), get your blood tested (fortunately only a finger prick), and pick up your next prescription. It will make your muscles sore and will seriously dry out your hair and skin. If you do it, you should try to time it during the fall/winter because you'll need to stay out of the sun; although Retin-A also causes sunburn.

Since your acne isn't that severe, though, you probably wouldn't need to be on Accutane for the full six months.

I'm sure you could find a dermatologist willing to prescribe it to you even if you don't have cystic acne, but I think the main wrinkle could be insurance. It's possible they might refuse to cover the treatment if your acne is non-cystic, so you should check with your dermatologist and/or your insurance company beforehand.

  • Help me get the mosquitoes out of my gazebo
    Icon_small

What kind of netting is it? Is it a screen like you find on windows or is it the more pliable mosquito net material? If the latter, maybe you could buy more and completely replace it. That would probably look better than patching it.

There are also sprays you can put on the netting itself (much nicer than putting the stuff on your body) that add an additional layer of defense.

  • How are you voting on 1183?
    Icon_small

Since the polling is close, with 1183 being slightly ahead, I guess I'm voting no. I'll be unhappy if it passes, but I'm hoping the measure loses with a very small margin.

I want the WSLCB to continue to sweat. I want the state legislature to get off its ass and do something while finally ignoring the anti-alcohol nutters. And, if the legislature still refuses to change the law, I want Costco to learn its lesson and propose an initiative that doesn't solely benefit itself.

  • Do you choose the 3D version of films when given the choice?
    Icon_small

I've only seen Avatar in the newer 3D, and I was less than impressed. I greatly prefer *real* 3D, where images actually jump out at you instead of contemporary 3D, which adds a limited amount of 3rd dimension, almost always added in post-production.

I'm also very skeptical about how well 3D would work in a home theater unless consumers are willing to pony up for a ginormous TV set for the full home theater experience. It seems like that sort of thing has fallen out of favor in this economy.
