  • Is there any way to "actually" enlarge my penis, and is it safe?
    Clw_color_crop_small

No. There are no pills or creams that will make the penis larger.

There is surgery, but the results I have seen are disappointing at best and too often disastrous. Surgery is not likely to enhance appearance or self esteem. Most importantly, surgeries can only harm one's sexual function, and the "enlarged" penis will never function as well as it did in the natural state. A man must weigh the value of potentially appearing larger against that of his sexual satisfaction and the ability to satisfy his partner.

One surgical approach is to stuff fat, harvested from elsewhere in your body, under the skin of the penis to increase the volume and girth. The resulting "chubby" penis tends to look lumpy at best, and scarring from the procedure can produce grotesque constrictions of the normally soft, smooth skin. In the erect state, the texture of this penis is squishy, not hard, because fat does not engorge and firm up like the erectile tissue within the penis.

Another procedure guarantees a "longer" penis by cutting the ligament that attaches the root of the penis to the pubic bone, so that when standing in front of a mirror, gravity makes the hanging penis appears longer. When this penis is erect, however, it is like a tree with its roots cut. It won't stand up straight, but dangles uselessly. Thrusting doesn't work any more, and that ligament is not available to apply pleasing pressure against your partner.

Careful studies of human sexual function have shown that sexual satisfaction is not even related to the size of the penis, and certainly not to its appearance. "It is not the size of the tool, but the skill of the craftsman."

"Might the situation change substantially?" is a question for the patient to consider in the process of making a decision regarding sterilization. The doctor is there to help in the process, and the doctor needs to know that the patient is making an informed and insightful decision.

  • What would the reasoning be for a health care provider to deny sterilization options to a person who wanted it?
    Clw_color_crop_small

Sterilization can be a very appealing solution to the frustrations and failures of temporary birth control methods. Though sterilization would provide good short-term benefits for a patient, one must also consider the long term. Might the situation change substantially? If retaining the option to later have children would be in the best interest of the patient, then sterilization should be deferred. In some cases the decision is difficult, but, after consultation, both the patient and the provider need to be in agreement that the elective surgery is definitely in the patient's best long-term interest.

  • Permanent Birth Control

Pills are generally a very good and safe option for a couple spacing their children or waiting to see if children are going to fit into the plan for them.
Only when they have decided on no more children, is permanent birth control an option. So the decision process is most important.
For a committed couple, vasectomy usually will be the best sterilization choice, because it is the most convenient, least invasive, most effective, and least expensive.
However, if there is a reason for the man to preserve his option to parent more children, or if there is a specific desire for the woman to undergo sterilization, then considering a tubal sterilization ("tubal ligation") procedure or a less invasive tubal occlusion device for the woman is reasonable.
There are several methods of temporary and reversible birth control which may work very well until you have made the decision for permanent sterilization. Your doctor can help you review the choices and make a decision that works for you.

  • Effects of a Vasectomy on Erection / Sexual Functions?
    Clw_color_crop_small

Vasectomy is the method of birth control used by 20 million couples in the US today and by hundreds of millions worldwide. It has been widely studied for possible adverse effects. These studies have not documented any pattern of adverse health effect nor adverse effect on sexual function caused by vasectomy. That is to say that sexual interest, arousal, erection, ejaculation are not altered by the vasectomy procedure, which simply blocks the path for sperm to join the semen. The semen ejaculated after vasectomy differs only in the absence of the microscopic sperm cells. If you have a microscope, you could check it out for yourself!

  • How do you prevent/treat ingrown hairs?
    Clw_color_crop_small

Ingrown hairs occur because microscopic trauma around the opening of a hair follicle stimulates skin cells to grow and stick together, sealing over the follicle, as if they were sealing a minor cut. Prevent ingrown hairs by shaving not so closely, leaving the cut hair at or above the skin surface. Avoid tiny nicks to the skin around the follicle by using a sharp new razor blade with an effective guard and good lubrication, or safer yet, use an electric trimmer.
