  Psychological drama books...

  5 0 Oooohh, what a great question--psychological novels where not much has to happen. Since you mentioned "The Assassination of Jesse James," I thought of another Western novel with psychological depth you might enjoy, "The Sisters Brothers" by Patrick deWitt. I wrote more about it, here. Then, for an older psychological novel that has become an underground classic, try Herman Hesse's "Steppenwolf." For a dark, gritty, psychological novel set in the Northwest, try the New York Review of Books' reprint of Don Carpenter's 1966 debut, "Hard Rain Falling." I wrote about that one here and here. A few others thoughts: Tim O'Brien's "In the Lake of the Woods," Per Petterson's "Out Stealing Horses", Pat McCabe's "The Butcher Boy" or Dave King's "The Ha-ha." Want more?   0 0 Here are some to try: As Simple as Snow by Gregory Galloway It's got some excellent mix tape lists, a strange little mystery you need to work out on your own and a great first line:"Anna Cayne had moved here in August, just before our sophmore year in high school, but by February she had, one by one, killed everyone in town." The House of Tomorrow by Peter Bognanni Reminiscent of the humor of John Green, this story about a truly sheltered (he grew up homeschooled by his grandmother in a geodesic dome) and the punk rock teen with cancer who becomes his friend is a very funny, poignant coming-of-age novel. Rats Saw God by Rob Thomas I know it's old and the cover is lame, but I think Perks may have taken some cues from this one. A cult classic teen novel. Scream Queens from the Dead Sea by Gilad Elbom A truly strange fiction debut that instantly made me think of Palahniuk.   What are some good fantasy books?

  2 0 I will second the Rothfuss--I am looking forward to digging into the Wise Man's Fear, the second book, soon. But I am shelling out cash to get A Dance With Dragons at the George R. R. Martin event this Friday. I have also been hearing good things about Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings. But for some other fantasy series that have shorter waits at the library, try Naomi Novik's Temeraire series starting with His Majesty's Dragon (dragons during the Napoleonic wars!) or John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series starting with The Ruins of Gorlan. mishalibrarian answered in Book Recommendations 10 months ago Answer, comment & read 9 more answers »

  Recommend a book please! (Nearly impossible edition)

  0 0 For a great love story with ambitious scope, try Nicholas Mosley’s Hopeful Monsters. For something edgy and strange, you might try Steve Erickson’s Zeroville or Our Ecstatic Days or Lydia Millet’s Oh Pure and Radiant Heart. For contemporary London, try The Calligrapher by Edward Docx or One Day by David Nicholls. I also love The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets, which reminded me a lot of I capture the Castle by Dodie Smith. You might also enjoy Kate Morton’s gothic family sagas. For another precocious teen, try The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart.   can you recommend a good novel that has descriptive beach scenes

  1 0 There are two Virginia Woolf books with beach scenes (good ones, if I recall correctly): The Waves and To the Lighthouse. Pat Conroy's Beach Music and The Prince of Tides. Dorothea Benton Frank's Lowcountry books are set in beachy South Carolina. L. P. Hartley's The Shrimp and the Anemone, the first in the Eustace and Hilda books, gets its name from a beach scene at the beginning. Alessandro Baricco's Ocean Sea.
