  What are your favorite extra-super-good places for soup?

  0 0 It's a looooooong way from Seattle but near where my mom lives so we go here often. There are always two kinds of soup on offer and they are never anything less than sublime.   what is your 'go to' comfort food when feeling bad?

  1 0 When sick I go (or if I'm can't-get-out-of-bed sick, my sister goes for me) to my favorite Ma and Pa Mexican restaurant and get a large to-go order of their abondigas soup. Every restaurant's recipe is different but this place uses rich, homemade chicken stock full of cooked slices of carrots and spuds and then beef meatballs that are full of rice. It satisfies both body and soul. When I'm down, a small bowl of premium ice cream, eaten slowly, is very nice.   0 0 Thought of a few more novels that really reflect Seattle at a specific time. There's "Bread, Alone" by Judith Hendricks which is set in '92(remember that steel band that played non-stop in front of Nordstrom?) and "Never Mind Nirvana" by Mark Lindquist, about the Seattle music scene right at the height of grunge; it's a fun read as the protagonist lives a very well-off, downtown life (he lives in a loft at the Harbour Steps, eats at all the best places, etc).   Homemade Kahlua recipe with vodka and real coffee?

  3 0 I've done coffee liqueur with double-strength espresso brewed in a French Press. Added vodka, sugar and a vanilla bean, stored it for a few months and then strained it through a cheesecloth to get the press sediment out of the finished product. It was really delightful. Next time I'm going to brew the coffee Turkish style (ground as fine as dust and boiled and cooled with the water and sugar several times) and then add the vodka, vanilla bean and more sugar to see how that compares.   1 0 If you can track down "Anybody Can Do Anything" by Betty ("The Egg & I") MacDonald, it's a great autobiography about living in Seattle during the Great Depression. She lived just a block south of Roosevelt High School, on 15th NE and spent those years working odd jobs all over the city.   Going to San Francisco, Tuesday. Used to live there but haven't been for several years. Anything new I should know about?

  1 0 The buses are a lot better now as they are GPS tracked and every proper bus shelter has a sign which shows how many minutes it will be until the next one shows.
