  How can I teach a 5-year-old respect for nice things?

  3 0 This might not help so much with wear and tear on the household fixtures and moldings, but with my kids, we taught them the idea that somethings you can touch with your hands and somethings you can only touch with your eyes. Even at 4-5 years old this made sense to them and helped them know what things were not OK to play with. This was especially helpful at various grandparent's houses which are full of delicate, fragile tchotskis.   Which store has the worst design layout? QFC in Broadway Market or Whole Foods on Westlake?

  1 0 Whole Foods on Westlake and the Metropolitan Market in W Seattle both give over what looks like more than half of their floor space to high-margin prepared foods. In both cases, these areas are in the front of the house and you have to pass through them to get to any groceries. It's not surprising that these bastard children of a grocery store and a buffet restaurant and not really great as either. At the Metro, in particular, it's almost like they don't want you to buy anything but prepared food and wine (also, really expensive cheese). The Safeway in White Center may be pedestrian and downmarket, but it's at least designed as a grocery store, with adequate parking and wide aisles and is a lot more pleasant to shop at.   What are the best ways to promote a graphic design/marketing business to a local community?

  0 0 What you do has to be focused on the results it can deliver to the bottom line. There are now a plethora of "self-serve" options online and the idea that branding/graphic design has some inherent valuable but not "value-able" impact is out the window. You have to show that you can improve their business by A: reducing their costs or B: increasing their revenue and do one or both better than they can do themselves.   How does Chantix work? Does it work?

  0 0 I took Chantix and so far it's working. 4 weeks w/o a cigarette. What others say is true, smoke while you're on Chantix and you really don't get the nicotine rush. Don't smoke while on the drug, and you don't really miss the nicotine (although I do miss smoking). The downside in my personal experience: Intensified my standard issue seasonal depression Brought my "last nerve" a lot closer to the surface--I wasn't more aggressive, but I was less patient I didn't have nightmares, but I did have weird, vivid dreams. I also had night sweats. Ultimately, I quit taking it because the depression thing was getting pretty unpleasant but it did seem to work in helping me put down the smokes.   How the hell do you explain Mars Hill Church?

  5 0 The truth is, a whole lot of people want to be told what to do and what to think. Mars Hill and churches like it do an exemplary job of this. Mars Hill is clever enough to wrap their conservative, uber traditional values in new clothing to appeal to a younger generation, but I don't think it's a cult.   What's the difference between a pirate, a privateer, and a multinational corporate trawler?

  2 0 Not sure about the multinational corporate trawler, but the difference between a pirate and a privateer is basically a license. A pirate is "unlicensed"--in other words a free acting thief on the high seas. A privateer is basically a pirate used as a weapon of war. A privateer, who flies his nation's flag unlike a pirate, is given a warrant to seize any property of the enemy free and clear. Two countries at war, say Britain and France, would legally allow piracy on each others military and trade shipping. This would extend to their allies as well. So while Spain was allied with France, Spanish treasure ships were fair game for British privateers. One successful capture could make the entire crew very rich men.
