Sorry to barge in on a private conversation, but you guys know that they're all over Canada, right? I apologize if you knew this already and now I'm stating the obvious.

  • Are there any other options than birth control for a 12-year-old with a very heavy period?

That totally sucks that your daughter is having such difficulty with her periods. My little sister had the same problem at a similar age and my mom got her on birth control. The only problem was that, as a twelve-year-old, my sister was horrible at remembering to take it and my mom wasn't always able to remind her either.

I have NO idea if this is even possible for a twelve-year-old, so I could be way way off, but I have an IUD at the moment (the Mirena) and it releases a very, very low dose of hormone slowly over time (I believe it's progestin?) and eliminates my periods altogether. It's pretty sweet, in my opinion. The only thing is I don't know if it would be recommended, or even possible, to insert it into a twelve-year-old, or even if your daughter would be okay with that. If not, maybe something to think about for when she's older. In any case, I hope she's able to find some relief soon!

  • What will you do for your dear mother?

My mom passed away a couple of years ago, so I'll largely be pretending Mother's Day isn't happening (it can be tough watching all of the squishy mother/child things going on).

I have some jewelry I inherited from her (a necklace I gave her for the mother's day before she passed away) and so I'll wear that, and also probably call my dad and tell him I love him.

I also volunteer on our province's crisis line most Sundays and this Sunday won't be different. It'll be interesting seeing what kind of calls we receive.

Oh goodness, I'm glad I could help. I hope your procedure went well!

  • What can I expect with Versed (conscious sedation) in general and with an endoscopic ultrasound in particular?

I underwent conscious sedation while I had an abortion a few months ago. I was super nervous because the idea of having my uterus vacuumed out and then scraped out with a metal spoon didn't seem very appealing, but I don't remember very much about the actual procedure. I was kind of babbling away at the doctor and then I felt a little bit of pain so I stopped talking, and then the next thing I knew I was all done and hanging out in the recovery/waiting-type room. I felt absolutely normal probably not more than half an hour later, minus a little residual pain. I remember feeling very floaty and I wanted to giggle a little bit but was "there" enough to not want to look silly in front of the doctor and nurse (though upon further consideration that's a bit of a moot point considering they hand their hands inside my uterus).

Sorry I don't have much information about your specific procedure, but conscious sedation in general is pretty great, in my opinion. Most people I've spoken with have said they just don't remember much about the actual procedure.
