Thankfully, most of my existing magic spots stick around. I can still hit Zig Zag, Canon, or the (still very nice in its new spot) Bleu.

Which location is gone, Pairustwo? Not La Fontana, I don't think.

If you don't mind fast food, Zesto burgers or Ballard Bros. seafood are good.

  • Is there a better burger place than Dick's?

Red Mill is very, very, very good.

For really super-specialty burgers, I suggest Lunchbox Laboratory, which has some really unusual types of meat, loads of odd sauces and cheeses, and bacon. Beware that if you order Bacon at Lunchbox, you'll get a huge heap of it. Lunchbox also has amazing shakes and killer mac'n'cheese, fries and tater tots.

Zesto in Ballard, right by Ballard High School, is pretty tasty. The Godfather burger is huge and very good.

I second Aladdin Gyrocery on the Ave. Excellent Greek & Middle Eastern food, with a back room (something like a cross between a Turkish rug market and a hippie den) for eating and hanging out.

  • How do you make homemade liqueur?
    Peep-skunk-2_small

Cointreau is orange. Campari is bitter stuff.

I have a book here called Classic Liqueurs by Cheryl Long & Heather Kibbey. ISBN is 1-889531-06-5. It has lots of good recipes, including ones for a few different orange liqueurs. But the general idea is to buy basic vodka (I use Smirnoff), and put vodka, sugar and fruit together. You can also add brandy with the vodka or do straight brandy, whiskey, or rum, which work better with various fruits - plum rum is amazing, and plums also do well with a vodka/brandy mix. Hunt down this book, though, and you're set.

  • Best bars in Seattle?

Agree on Zig Zag. Murray Stenson on nights he's there (Mon.-Fri. I believe) and Erik on nights when Murray isn't. Get there right at 5 when they open, wait for a bar seat, chat up Murray or Erik, explain the sorts of liquor, flavors or types of cocktails you like (and/or don't like) and have them set you up with something. Order food; ask for drinks to match the food. Chat with the people next to you.

If you like Long Islands and club drinks, Noc! Noc! on 2nd, Friday night, when Scotty is tending. Ask for the Tierra del Fuego, an awesome spicy drink.

Bleu on Broadway, for almost claustrophonbic booths (in a good way), tasty quirky food, and nice tenders. Lots of bizarre drinks, mostly odd twists on old cocktails. Sit at the bar if you can. Order the Spanish Coffee for a show with your drink.

Hazlewood in Ballard. Lots of antique drinks, interesting people and place, cheap good pizza next door at Snoose Junction.

These are where I drink, though I hear good things about Tavern Law - don't forget to pick up the telephone and ask if they've got room in the-- oops, said too much already!

  • What to do with visiting teen in Seattle?

Laser show. Pacific Science Center. Best to go on a Friday night when John aka Ivan is working. It does matter, because the show is live: the basics are pre-programmed on a CD, but most of the effects are played live from a switchboard in the back of the room (go look at it and talk to the guy running things). The music is loud, the bass rocks the floor, and the light show is amazing. The Pink Floyd "The Wall" show at midnight on Friday night is absolutely the best.
