  Why is it that The Stranger only gives write ups or reviews to local bands that already have a big draw or are signed to small or major/indie labels?

  5 1 Ben Gibbard has a new side project? Seriously, though, the Stranger's responsibility as a publication is to providing our readers with the most useful, entertaining, and comprehensive coverage possible of everything from new/local acts to established/international ones. Sometimes this means hyping a relatively unknown local band (say, Telepathic Liberation Army in this issue's U&Cs), sometimes it means publishing a great piece on a huge, national touring act.   What are your thoughts on 3 or 4 bands on a Bill?

  1 0 I'm going to agree with everyone here. When I was young, I thought the more bands per bill, the more I was getting for my money, end of story. Years of going to shows later, I'm pretty happy with a two or three band bill, outside of really extraordinary circumstances.   Is it possible to win over local writers or DJs who don't care for your band's style of music?

  0 0 Well, there's your band's "style" and then there's how well you're executing that style. Most critics/DJs/gatekeepers I know try to maintain pretty broad tastes in music, but, obviously, if you're an alt-country band, seek out critics/radio shows that do alt-country, etc. It sounds like you're doing everything right—building a fan-base, not hassling folks too much. Keep at it. But, no, you probably can't change what a critic thinks of what you do without changing what it is that you do (although, of course, people have been known to change their minds sometimes).   Has AEG buying the two Showbox venues and taking over part of Bumbershoot's booking had a positive or negative effect on Seattle?

  3 0 I don't think it's changed anything much except where some of the profits go, which doesn't really effect me as a show-goer. Ticket prices have gone up, maybe, but ticket prices are going up across the board, not just at AEG venues/events. Booking hasn't really changed at either Showbox (the same folks are running it as before the buy-out), nor has the feel or service at either venue. Bumbershoot continues to be a big mixed bag of high-profile mainstream acts down to local bands (and it hasn't been a super-cheap, all local festival since long before AEG was involved). They did give the Showboxes a really annoying website redesign, I guess. But really, whatever keeps the historic Showbox in business is a positive effect in my book.
