I should start by saying that I haven't finished the book yet. Regarding the structure however, I have a couple of thoughts.
I really enjoyed the idea of following one character from one story to the next. It has a novelty factor ala Pulp Fiction. Although I think things would have worked better had the stories followed one another chronologically (In the end there may be a reason to introduce one character prior to another - I don't know and maybe the earliest chapter wasn't a strong opener).
More technically I think the evolving nature of the transitions from one chapter to another, each related to the prior yet distinct, is perhaps intended to mirror the evolving nature of the characters. Which seems to be the point of the novel: We can't, in the end, recognize the pit from which we were dug nor the stone from which we were hewn.
We've transitioned seamlessly into someone else and are left wondering how and why that happened.
