Okay, well here's the context: I have a friend who regularly talks about how he wants to quit. I want to say something encouraging, but also show that I won't judge him if he starts up again.

Basically I want to say, "I think it's really awesome that you want to quit and I think you should but if you don't I won't think any less of you."

    Actually that sounds pretty good.

Is there a way to encourage your friends to quit smoking without being a dick about it?

  • Do balding guys who shave their head think they're fooling people?
    Birthday_1_small

I think it's the opposite of them hiding their baldness. It's kind of like "I know I'm losing my hair, so I'm going to speed it along instead of having an awful combover or bald patch." I'm not bald, so I can't really say for sure why, but that's my guess.

I like the look, personally. It shows confidence. Guys who are trying to hide it just start wearing funny hats or getting hair pieces. Shaving your head makes it seem like the guy thinks it's no big deal to be bald, that it's nothing to be hung up about.

If you want a good run down of Portland in general, I highly recommend the 'Zinester's Guide to Portland' [www.pdxguide.org].

  • What is the best/most interesting neighborhood to live in in Portland?
    Birthday_1_small

Personally, I really like most areas of SE Portland, especially the Hawthorne area. There are plenty of real good cafes, shops, grocery stores, and the like in a small area that is easily walkable/bike-able. Plus, they have a Powell's satellite store nearby. It's pretty easy to bus it anywhere else from there, but most folks I know rarely have a reason to leave.

Folks also really like Alberta in NE, for similar reasons. Plus, rent is really cheap. I'm not a big fan of how gentrified it's become but that's the way it works, I suppose.

"Your friends without degrees may simply have more experience working and a better idea of the sort of work they are willing and like to do."

i think that's likely the case. a lot of folks (myself included) get away with not having jobs (or just having meaningless part time jobs) while at university. i got by on financial aid checks, while people i graduated high school with had to find well-paying jobs with benefits if they didn't want to live with their parents. thus, they have longer work histories than i do, but i have a piece of paper that says i know a thing or two about sociology.

as a result, the only relevant job i could find was an americorps position at a non-profit where i get paid less than minimum wage. should've gone to tech school or something.
