  • Distopic fiction, or something else, for some good lunch time reading?
    Fluff_small

Some good answers already here - based on your mention of Butler, LeGuin and Never Let Me Go (which I actually just finished myself), I would like to suggest a similarly gripping sci fi novel (though not really dystopian, it's pretty dark) by Connie Willis, called the Doomsday Book.

It's the story of a future grad student of history in a future where time travel allows historians to study their subject up close and personal. Something goes wrong, and our young heroine is trapped in a medieval village threatened by the Black Death as her future grad school tries to find her without compromising the timeline.

Yes, he was one of many serial killers operating in this area, especially in the 1990s, when it seemed like body parts were being found by hikers nearly every day in some forest or park. At one point, a working theory was that Ted Bundy, another local monster, may have been responsible.

There was a Green River Task Force, formed in 1984 and tasked with finding the Green River Killer. Then-Sheriff (now US Representative) David Reichert was part of that effort for a couple of decades...

  • What's the deal with "The Green River Killer" and just where IS the Green River?

Is this a serious question? The Green River Killer was Gary Ridgeway, a serial killer named for the location of the remains of his first known victims, discovered in the 1980s.

The Green River is a river running from Lester, WA on the west side of the Cascade Mtns, through the Howard Hanson Reservoir, Maple Valley, Auburn and Tukwila up to Elliott Bay in south Seattle.

  • Hi, I'm looking for some Whedon-esque books.

Sorry for the late reply, but you might enjoy a fun book called "Soon I Will Be Invincible" by Austin Grossman. It's a lot more like Dr. Horrible than Buffy or Firefly, but with a great sense of humor.

Thanks for these! My 13 year old son loved Hunger Games and these are great recommendations!

  • Word that means "unbearable cuteness"?
    Fluff_small

I've read that the word "gheegle" is supposedly a Filipino (Tagalog?) word that means "urge to pinch or squeeze something that's unbearably cute", not sure if that's true, though...

Isn't the term "schizophrenia" sort of an outdated catch-all for a broad and sometimes unrelated range of disorders?

  • How does one become a Sea Fair pirate?

It helps to work at Boeing, where a number of them came from. Also, you need to enjoy rum.

A friend of mine was the captain of the Pirates a few years ago -- those guys were always parking the "Duck" (their parade float/ship) in our cul-de-sac. They like to party...

Don't give up that easy! I replaced the heating element in my dryer several years ago, and replaced a blown terminal block recently. Neither part cost anywhere near as much as a new dryer.
