Hemingway Daiquiri for the win- although it must be pointed out that your chances of running across any Havana Club are fairly slim- not nonexistent, but slim. Flor de Cana or Cruzan work alright, and actually some rums with a little more age on them can turn out a nice drink.

  • What is a good Gin drink thats not a Martini or a 2 item mix?

A French 75 is a straight up classic that the girls and the cocktail geeks can all get behind. It's also the greatest (admittedly boozy) brunch drink and "corpse reviver" in the world, and the formula is easily tweaked to incorporate different flavors by substituting different liqueurs and even base spirits.

1 oz gin (I like Beefeater, I use a little more gin if using a softer gin, like Plymouth)
2 to 3 tsp (1/3 to 1/2 oz) lemon juice
2 to 3 tsp simple syrup or Cointreau

Shake and strain into a flute or cocktail glass, top with sparkling wine (something lean and acidic, try Gruet for $15 at Trader Joe's). Lemon or orange twist.

You can also double everything up and serve it over crushed ice for a great tall drink. Try subbing in Cognac, or heck, rum for the gin, St. Germain for the syrup or Cointreau. If you sub in Licore Strega or Green Chartreuse you'll probably need to add a little extra sugar. You could even try muddling in a little mint, if you're so inclined.

Yes, in fact you did- by dickishly dismissing my answer.

  • Do you tip when you get take-out?
    Avatar_default

20% is too much when you aren't receiving table service. 10% is reasonable compensation for a host or hostess taking your order accurately and putting it together for you.

One thing I'd like to add to the whole tipping thing is this: it's understandable to not want to shell out for poor or discourteous service, but if you opt to return to a place, you are, in a way, putting a seal of approval on the quality of service they offer. For instance, I regularly eat at a pho joint which has service which on occasion borders on offensive, but I love the food, and I continue to go there, and while I don't throw down the 30% I give my favorite bartender, I do kick down a couple of bucks on my order, which still gets me a crazy delicious meal for cheap.

To me my life is worth more than the time and energy it takes to be dedicated to frugality. If I'm flush enough to be ordering restaurant food, not tipping is classless. If I shouldn't be spending the money, I eat at home.

Yes, I am familiar with the meaning of the term "biased". I was merely using a snarky rhetorical device to contradict a (rather dulled) point you fail to back up with any argument- let alone a cogent one- as well as draw attention to the fact that you used a two word sentence in which you got both words wrong.

The amount of time I spend on these forums makes me a pretty lazy troll. I just thought you might want your question answered, seen as how you asked it.

And "Your" teetering on the edge of being able to string a sentence together. If "Your Bias" means "You are informed" then, yes, I am. If "Your Bias" means "You aren't giving me a pass to be a total cheapass" then, no, I'm not. You asked for opinions, I gave you mine. Asinine.

20% is awesome if we've earned it. The service industry and I thank you for your class.

  • Tipping the Bartender?
    Avatar_default

I'm curious as to where your friends work, but I would strongly suggest they look for new jobs. Hopefully if they work in places where the average clientele is trashy enough to leave a quarter for a beer, the management has a liberal policy on throwing the quarter back at them and saying, "You clearly need this more than I do." Unless the clientele is mostly senior citizens, in which case that borders on charity work and I applaud your friends' self-sacrifice.

Tipping a buck a drink is very generous when your drink is $4, much less so when your drink is $10. It's sort of like having a default $3 tip for an entree, except that you don't expect a server to be there right away with another New York Strip when you finish the first one.

Well, clearly this was a bad experience, and while I understand that there are advantage- from the restaurant's point of view- to having one server per party, there is no reason to expect you to sit there waiting for the one server if there's someone else who can help you. I do find that some people act as though they have a God-given right to a glass that never runs dry, and in a busy bar, this is sometimes not possible, and to those people I would suggest that if they don't have the patience to wait a few minutes between beers they should sit (A) at the bar, or (B) in their living room. Assuming you aren't one of those people, can I assume you're as willing to tip extra for service above and beyond as you are to penalize for service that doesn't meet reasonable expectations?

  • Best hot whiskey drinks?
    Avatar_default

I'm not a fan of the average bar Hot Toddy with bourbon and honey, but I am a major devotee of the Irish Whiskey Skin. Hot Irish whiskey is the joint. Never mind the weird name.

2 oz Irish whiskey (preferably Redbreast; if you're feeling less flush, Bushmill's, Power's, or Jameson is fine)
    1 tsp sugar/1 sugarcube
2 to 4 oz of hot water
    a piece of lemon peel

If you want to do an American whiskey Toddy, and you want to do it right, do this:

    2 oz Bourbon
1 sugar cube you scrape against an unpeeled lemon to get some of the oil
2 to 4 oz hot water
a small bit of broken up cinnamon stick
a slice of lemon with a couple/few cloves stuck in it

Another great hot drink with a weird name is Sano Grog. Sounds strange, but is delicious. Two of these and your sore throat will be cured. And your insomnia.

    1 oz Bourbon
    1 oz Jamaican rum
    1/2 oz Grand Marnier
    1/2 tsp sugar
2 to 4 oz hot water
thin slice of lemon floated on top
