  • How best to (symbolically) cleanse a house of bad spirits?
    Avatar_default

A good cleaning and a different color splashed here is a very good idea.

Making something your own via visible changes not only makes it clear to deep parts of ourselves that the place is different than it was; it strongly hints to living people who might come around looking for unpleasant seediness that things have changed.

Scrubbing any resin off the walls is a good place to start.

  • Can you sneeze in your sleep?
    Avatar_default

My understanding is no or at least very rare. Ever remember hearing someone sleeping who sneezed? Me neither. Ever remember hearing somewhat coughing in sleep? Me too.

If mere experience is not enough, we have the internet:

Despite the joke, I am serious that this can be a decent way to get the gross structure figured out.

Once you have that you can perhaps categorize (this one goes somewhere on branch 1, that goes somewhere on branch 3) and then do your full trees within the large branches. Each large branch has a more manageable subset of your 14000 protein sequences.

  • What E-reader should I get (Update please)
    Avatar_default

..but what are you using it for? A straight Kindle is OK, haven't used the Nook but admire the native number of formats it supports.

There are freebie conversion programs from Gutenburg to at least some of the available formats for just about any reader device you can name.

I had originally gotten the Kindle with the idea of downloading many PDF manuals into the beast (which I did) but with the standard screen version I often have to go landscape to read those manuals at all. Diagrams are often too small to be useful. I do like the device a lot but....

If I had to do it over again Maybe the Kindle DX (big screen) or more likely the iPad. The thing about the iPad is it really is a decent reader (for a device in mid 2010): between Kindle App, Apples native App, a PDF viewer, SPL Mobile, iBookshelf and eReader; an awful lot of bases are covered. The screen is clear, it has good support for zoomin/zoomout.

A downside of the iPad (mentioned by Penn of Penn and Teller) is it has so much else on it, it is very very easy to end up watching a movie or something instead of reading.

  • Anybody have experience with massive phylogenetic alignments?

While you're searching for something better: Have you considered looking at randomized subsamples with replacement and doing trees of that?

This will let you see the forest for the trees (Sorry, couldn't resist).

  • I want to get a road bike but aren't sure if I'll use it enough in the Seattle rain... got any recommendations on gear to make it do-able?
    Avatar_default

Personally I am not that keen on Road Bikes for Seattle.

The skinny tires are efficient but they are more likely to get a flat, have more problems with potholes and drain grates. Seattle has a lot of these.

Extra tough tires are heavier for any given size, and more expensive, but I find flats a miserable experience so I go slower and work more but have fewer flats. All this is less of a problem when a person is in shape (less load on the tires).

Whoops, I mean try turning up the temp in the freezer (which may decrease the total amount of cooling) and the fridge (which diverts more cold to the freezer).

  • How do I keep my refridgerator from freezing my milk, orange juice and liquids?
    Avatar_default

The controls on a fridge are not what they seem. If I remember correctly from "The Psychology of Everyday Things" one control has the feedback: a thermostat as you would expect. It could be for the freezer, it could be for the fridge.

The OTHER control adjusts how much cooling the fridge vs the freezer get relative to each other. This is cheap but makes the controls very unintuitive.

The Amazon.com sample pages include the refrigerator explanation.

The book is a very good read, especially for anyone that deals with stupid human interfaces....not just computers but light switch layouts and even doors.

The author was hired by Apple.

So you could try turning up the temp in the freezer while turning down the temp in the fridge!

  • Are there still Drive-In movie theatres?
    Avatar_default

I believe the Everett drive-in near I-5 is still around. The Auburn Valley is something special though, several screens, double features, pretty close to 1st run,

  • What is the most emotionally crushing movie you can name?
    Avatar_default

"The Plague Dogs" Animated, not for children. Based on the book by Richard Adams (better known for "Watership Down"). In contrast to the usual: Although the book has a different ending than the movie, it's the book with the happier ending.

    and

    "Sid and Nancy"

..and 19 minutes into the pilot for the post 9/11 version of "Battlestar Galactica" I had to turn it off and lie down for a while. I've heard [sic] nothing on TV before or since like it and I'm grateful about that.
