Check out Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything Vegetarian from the library. There's a whole section on how to construct a good veggie burger, kind of a "select one from each column" method, so you can choose whichever protein+veggie+binder you're in the mood for. And of course it also has a few recipes for some good combos.

  • Tax Question
    Pmkn_facesucker_small

Are you using a third-party website like Turbotax or Taxact, or are you using the "fillable forms" on the IRS page? The fillable forms are a lot like paper forms.. you have to do all the math, carrying forward amounts, etc. If you're using software or a website process, then I'm not sure if there is a glitch or if you answered a question wrong somewhere in there.

Generally speaking, though, your 1040 should have your W-2 wages (1776) on line 7, and your business income/loss on line 12 (-5079). So you'll probably end up with a negative AGI and pay no taxes, but just make sure you fill out the Sch. C completely and correctly, because they look closely at big losses like that.

If you sign up when the library opens at 10am, you'll be first in when we start at noon. If you sign up after that, expect a 1-3 hour wait. Try filing in March next year. :)

  • International Insurance?
    Pmkn_facesucker_small

If you're looking for "travel insurance", check out Worldnomads.com. I've used them for international trips, and the costs are quite reasonable while covering a wide variety of things including medical.

If you're just looking for health insurance, Costa Rica does have a universal, "free" health care system. I'm not sure if you would be covered as a foreigner, but it's worth finding out. Even if not, being a non-"western" country, any medical costs you might incur (barring emergency evacuation, which travel insurance covers) will be very low.

Also see if you can find an expat site or forum for Costa Rica. A year is a long time, and maybe there's health insurance that you can buy from inside the country that will cover what you need.

    Hope that helps.

Yep, the United Way runs a free tax prep program at the downtown library that can do prior year returns back to 2006. Come today, Wed, or Thurs, between 12-5 (come early to sign up, there will be a wait), and there is an IRS rep here that can print all of your W-2 or other documents from those years if you don't have them.

  • lf l owe the IRS money, and l got an EIC tax credit, are they able to apply the EIC to my debt as well?
    Pmkn_facesucker_small

Please clarify: Have you already filled out your tax return? Do you owe money from a previous tax return or other debt?

Your EIC calculation will be included on your tax return, reducing any amount you owe or increasing your refund. If you have a previous IRS debt, they will keep any refund and send you a letter explaining what they did, your new balance, and your options. Does this make sense?

"...primarily composed of illegal immigrants, the few people who can't afford their insurance and aren't getting subsidies to help them purchase it, and people who have decided to pay the penalty rather than purchase insurance."

This blog is full of health reform wonkery.. lots of good info inside.

  • What do I do with my Refund check from the IRS that was nearly double what I determined on my Return?
    Pmkn_facesucker_small

Yes, you will get a letter explaining the change. You also might be able to get some details of the situation if you plug in your info on this site:

    https://sa2.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp

A LOT of people are getting bigger refund checks than expected this year because they didn't calculate the Making Work Pay credit of up to $400/person. Very charitable of the IRS to catch this on returns, I guess. I don't know if this is your issue, but in any case, feel free to cash it.

  • where can i buy a headlight bulb on capitol hill?
    Pmkn_facesucker_small

There's an auto parts store on 13th, just south of Pine, across from the Cuff. I think they mainly supply parts for local dealers or repair shops because it's just a plain brick building. I got a headlight bulb there last year, and the counter guy was nice and gave me a discount for no reason. They also have a small selection of auto accessories.
