a couple weeks worth of accrued sick time is a pretty decent amount to have as a safety net. and i wouldn't worry too much about taking off one day as "sick"/mental health day.

but, if you want to take more than that, why not just schedule it in advance with your employer and not worry about whether or not it's going to come back to bite you in the ass?

In my opinion, that's probably not such a hot idea.

This happened at my office a couple weeks ago: Someone left a briefcase (empty) wedged betweeen the wall and the soda machine. An employee found it and alerted his boss. twenty minutes later the bomb-squad showed up, the office was evacuated and we all lost half a day of work. Apparently, briefcase + soda machine = Die Hard III.

check their website. most major carriers (regence, premera, aetna, etc...) have links to plan summaries that explain what's covered, what's not and what their "pre-existing condition" policies are all about.

you could probably go that route without having to enter any identifying info about yourself.

my (former)ladyfriend and i spent quite a few afternoons reading "The Wine of Youth" by John Fante to each other, as we were both big fans of collections of short stories.

i'm in the minority - no cell phone, just a landline. i really enjoy being unreachable and having to survive by my wits when my car breaks down on I-90.
