Your parents' experience seems pretty consistent with the reviews I'm reading - some people have replaced their old machine with the same model, only new, and the new machine doesn't work like the old one does, probably because the new ones are manufactured somewhere else.

We're definitely looking for a way to package extra food for the fridge or freezer. I don't think I'd be comfortable vacuum-sealing meat and not cooling it, except for jerky, maybe.
