Hi! For the past 5 years I've been feeding my 2 cats (brother and sister) the basic recipe of :
60% raw meat (ground beef or turkey is what I normally use, usually I get ground beef from Trader Joe's)
20% grains - I cook either barley or millet; if I'm in a hurry, my cats don't mind minute oats
20% raw vegetable - carrots are what I use. I shred them in a blender beforehand.
For the proportions, I normally do 6 cups meat with 2 cups grains and two cups veggies. I mix them this crazy concoction in a big 'ole bowl (with rubber gloves) and then freeze most of it. I try not to make too much at one time, as my kitties (royalty they are to me) prefer it fresh. Cost wise, this operation isn't too much:
1 lb ground beef from trader joes: $1.99 1 lb barley from Greenwood/Ballard Markey: $0.50 1 lb bag of carrots from trader joes: $1.50 Naturally, the meat is the most expensive part of it, but it's worth it
OH YES! Very important thing. When I feed my little snugglies, I mix a bit of water into the final product when I put it onto their plate. It gives them much needed water, as Liver and Kidney problems are always an issue with our feline friends. The final made product I feed them of the raw concoction mixed with H2O looks disgusting, but my cats look great and their coats are as fluffy as can be. One more thing: My cats love wheat grass as well. I sprout some every few days and give it to them. When they see me with a new pot of grass they go ape shit! Go to PCC or some hippie place like that, go to the bulk section and get red winter wheat, and you can sprout it at home. Your kitties will thank you!
