  • I was a liberal then a moderate and now I'm getting more conservative. I'm not talking Tea Party here but WHY is this happening? Age...
    Meansceneprod-gothgirl7872_small

It might be helpful if you gave some examples of specific liberal beliefs you find yourself moving away from and conservative beliefs you find yourself moving towards. And maybe how old you are. "Not talking Tea Party here" leaves a fairly large spectrum of differing but reasonable political beliefs in play.

Word. Best of luck and god-speed through the wage slavery.

  • Is it Legal to Require Employees to Buy Special Shoes?
    Meansceneprod-gothgirl7872_small

I'm not a labor attorney (or an attorney of any kind) but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say yeah, that's totally legal. For the same reasons that having a dress code of any sort is legal. It's annoying but keep in mind that if you were starting an office job you'd most likely have to shell out a few hundred to a few grand for business or biz-caj attire, if you were starting a number of blue-collar jobs you'd need to buy not only steel-toes but a hard-hat, safety glasses, and your own tools, and if you were starting a healthcare job you'd need to buy some scrubs and vaccinations. Sorry, but deal with it and welcome to the working world.

  • What's the trick to really steep hill starts?
    Meansceneprod-gothgirl7872_small

Mahtli has a good point re: a bad clutch but I would also recommend maybe just practicing starting as fast as possible on flat ground and then working your way up progressively steeper inclines rather than starting on the steepest incline you can find.
Just throwing this out there, but I've also never heard of using the handbrake in these instances, apparently it's a thing some people do but it seems like an extra thing to worry about and a good way to burn out your parking/hand brake in a hurry, maybe you don't really need to do that?
As you get more used to your car and a stick in general you'll get the hang and feel of catching your car as it rolls back.
How do you get to Broadway (without rolling back into the car behind you)? Practice, practice, practice.

  • Do you peeps know anything about Provigil? Have you tried it? Did it make you anxious? Why doesn't my insurance want to cover it?
    Meansceneprod-gothgirl7872_small

I have taken it a couple of times and I'm considering pursuing a prescription since I just started an overnight job but I'm waiting to see if I actually need it, so far it seems like not.

It doesn't make me anxious, but I'm not anxiety prone, I can drink a buttload of coffee and go to sleep, and although it's been years and years since I've taken any I'm the type of girl who really digs speed. So YMMV, especially if you are very sensitive to stimulants. That said it is nothing like adderall, ritalin, or other ADHD indicated stimulants. There's no rush, no euphoria, and no "fun"- even if you crush it up and snort it (don't judge me), unless you consider staying up all night, sober, fun. That's why it was developed. Personally it just makes me feel like I don't need to sleep when I should be sleepy but I've never taken it for an extended period of time and some people who do have noted a range of physical and psychological effects. You can read about a variety of experiences here.

I don't know why your insurance won't cover it. It's prescribed for obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome related fatigue, narcolepsy, and shift work related sleep disorder (my all time favorite "disease", it's characterized by "night-time drowsiness and daytime insomnia") so if you don't have one of those your insurance provider may be hesitant to pay for off-label use. Or it may be because the patent on Provigil is about to expire and they want you to take the new expensive  Nuvigil instead. That seems like that's the sort of thing they'd tell you though.

  • Mother-daughter friendly hotels in San Francisco?
    Meansceneprod-gothgirl7872_small

Check out the Hotel Carlton, it's on Nob Hill, very simple, very nice.
It's a part of Joie De Vivre which has a number of other hotels on SF you might want to check out too (although most of the other JDV hotels are more in the $200-300 range).

  • What would make a tasty infused bourbon?
    Meansceneprod-gothgirl7872_small

Orange? and clove, cassia, cardamon, cloves, ginger, vanilla, and /or allspice (pumpkin pie flavors). I haven't tried it yet but this Supertaster article about orange and spice infused scotch whiskey was posted on Chow a couple of days ago. While I'm usually an enthusiast of no bullshit beverages (straight whiskey, black coffee) I must admit it does sound really good and while it wouldn't have the smokyness of scotch to bounce the orange/spice flavors off of it seems like it would work well with burbon too. And if your BF likes old fashioneds then it's in the flavor ballpark.

I don't have a recipe and I'm not going to pull a bitchy LMGTFY on you so I'll just go ahead and google "orange infused whiskey"... well dadgummit! this was on top (this is sounding better and better!)

As far as brand of burbon Zeagle's reccommendations are great and I'd toss in Makers too depending on your finances and access, but ask someone at your fav liquor store- you don't need to and shouldn't spend a lot on a bottle, it might not work and unless you have years to experiment, the subtle flavors of an expensive burbon will be lost in the infusion. If you're hella broke and can't risk $25-30 and your BF likes rye you could try Old Overholt- it's cheap, historic, "not too bad for that price", and I think that it could really benefit from infusion.       Unless your BF is into Kid Rock (or just really likes them, for some reason) don't bother with Jim or Jack- the $5 up to the next level is worth it.

FWIW your idea is risky but awesome, Zeagle and Griffin have good points but if he likes old fashioneds he's not just into straight burbon- he likes fancy shit too (if I were writing an article on 'what you drink says about you' I'd say old fashioned = "manly yet stylish") you know your guy.

There's a lot of rad in a heartfelt, hand-made, novel gift. Even if it doesn't quite work the first time the process might spark a burbon interest in you and an infusion intrest for him and then suddenly y'all are being all cute and couple-y with your newfound joint activity.

Best of luck and have fun!

Thanks! I guess some people just aren't into conceptual costumes. It's cool though: thumbs-downs are temporary, the present is eternal, and the desire for thumbs-ups is the root of all suffering.

  • Should I avoid buying a Subaru?
    Meansceneprod-gothgirl7872_small

Not all, but many Subarus produced from 1996 to 2000 are/were prone to head gasket problems. If you're set on buying one made in those years do your homework and make sure that either you're buying a non-faulty-engine-model(!?!), or that the head gaskets have already been replaced.
If you can afford it just get a newer Subaru or, if you can find it, an older one (hint: there are A LOT of lesbians who live in Cascadia).
If you want 4WD, good mpg. and dependability in the price range of a 1999 Outback there's not really much else out there (Honda CRV maybe?).
