  • What is the equivalent of the 3000 mile oil change for most motorcycles?
    Finn3goof_small

I own or ahve owned at least 20 motorcycles. currently own two with one on the way.

Maintenance sechedules vary. What is the bike? Year, model, displacement is handy. 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

Bikes tend to get better mileage but many also tend to put out more emissions than a 72 valiant. 2 strokes are flat out eco-killers. Modern fuel infected bikes are better.

Big ass and older bikes around 1000cc should be in the vacinity of 40mpg and many newer bikes around 500cc or smaller can get 60mpg or better.

I put tends of thousands of miles on my bikes every year (well, not this year) and change oil regularly using synth and synth blends for some bikes and dino for others. I rearely go more than 3K miles and on older bikes like Thunderbolts and Eldorados for instance you may want to change the oil every 1000 miles (a bit extreme but these bikes are special).

  • What can you do with pistachio shells? Environmentaly friendly ideas?
    Finn3goof_small

Pistachio shells are great for kid's art projects but for most folks the best thing to do is compost them.

  • Why is Washington abbreviated "WN" on boats when it's "WA" everywhere else?
    Finn3goof_small

WA is the Fed (post office) designation for Washington. They began standardizing such things around 1980 or so. Before that folks used all sorts of letter combos to describe the state. Washington had been using WN for decades before the Feds opted for WA. Letters mailed at the post office were just as likely to read Wash. in the 70s and before.

Standardization was wanted since some states used the same two letter combo on official docs.

I'm sure there's a more wonky explanation out there but that's the gist.

  • Where in downtown Seattle can I have a drink with a baby in tow?

Rendezvous has a restaurant area that kids can be in and the owners are successful parents...

  • Where's a good place to eat oysters?
    Finn3goof_small

My answer/suggestion is a bit off from your original question but I thought it relevant.

There is an island near Port Townsend called Marrowstone Island. It is where Fort Flagler is.

On that island is park called Mystery Bay. It is a dock used by some folks often dismissed around the sound as "trawler trash" but are, in fact, pretty awesome. The only other folks I've ever seen use it are kayakers, my bitter enemies.

To the south of the ramp leading to the dock is one of the best free oyster beds in the sound. It's a cherished secret and I may be banished for revealing it, but I'm one of only a handful of folks who ever harvest from there. a few locals in nordland may but it's not many.

You can dig up your own oysters (you need a license available at Fred Meyer and other places) and have a pretty awesome time eating them surrounded but one of the nicest spots in the Northwest. There is a picnic shelter, outhouse restroom, and a barbeque grill for use. I've been going there for years (thought he oyster bed is somewhat recent) and rarely see the ranger so a bit of wine is OK. There are harvest limits but last I checked they were pretty generous.

It's the way oysters should be eaten- in the cold with some hot sauce or melter butter and roasted garlic, a little drunk on pinot noir with a nice piece of fish roasting, a fancy loaf of bread and maybe some other delectables.

Don't tell anyone I told you.

  • Recommend a book (novel) about or taking place in NYC
    Finn3goof_small

If you're into some non-fiction where NYC is a main character then "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk" by Legs McNeil is pretty awesome.

While everyone has seen "The Godfather" movie the book is fun as well.

"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is a friggin great book that nobody reads anymore.

"The Great Gatsby", of course, is a classic and seems particularly poignant these days.

"Breakfast at tiffany's" by capote is fun. and features an openly gay character "Fred". Gore vidal had already broken that particular barrier and was black-balled for it. That Capote was not, as far as I know, may either be a statement on Capote or a early sign of changing social ideas around homosexuality.

Speaking of Gore Vidal, "Burr" is awesome and takes place in NYC with a lot of 18th and early 19th century New York history.

"Faggots" is fascinating and very controversial even now.

There are hundreds of others... It's actually pretty tough to narrow the list with that sort of criteria!

    "At the Moving Picture Ball"
    A Photo-Play in 2 Reels [i.e., verses]
    Scenario by Howard Johnson [lyricist]
    Music by Joseph Santley
    Produced by Leo Feist, Inc.

    "Tempo di movie"

    "Reel 1"
Hip hooray I feel delighted, yesterday I was invited
To a swell affair, all the movie stars were there
Oh what fun, the party lasted till the break of dawn
Famous players turned to cabareters, how they fooled and carried on

    Chorus ("Without a Flicker"):
Dancing at the Moving Picture Ball, some scenario
Great big stars paraded 'round the hall, they were merry oh,
Handsome Wallace Reid stepped out full of speed,
And Theda Bara was a terror, she "vamped the little lady", so did
    Alice Brady,
Douglas Fairbanks shimmied on one hand, like an acrobat
Mary Pickford did a toe dance grand, and
    Charlie Chaplin with his feet
Stepped all over poor Blanche Sweet
Dancing at that Moving Picture Ball

    "Reel 2"
Ev'ry girl a handsome looker, had a dance with Mr Zukor
Mr Thomas Ince stepped around just like a prince
William Fox and Jesse Lasky both joined in the fun
Big directors mingled with the actors, why the whole bunch seemed like
    one

    Chorus:
Dancing at the Moving Picture Ball, some scenario
Great big stars paraded 'round the hall, they were merry oh,
Handsome Wallace Reid stepped out full of speed,
And Theda Bara was a terror, she "vamped the little lady", so did
    Alice Brady,
Douglas Fairbanks shimmied on one hand, like an acrobat
Mary Pickford did a toe dance grand, and
Sennett's bathing girls were there, each one was a little "bear"
Dancing at that Moving Picture Ball
