  0 0 First of all, let me say that as a CFP(r), I cannot give tax preparation advice (only tax PLANNING advice) . . . but just knowing what I know as a person, I know that your girlfriend cannot claim you as a dependent because you'll be filing your own taxes apart from her. A sole proprietor files a Schedule C with his 1040 return, and in the grand scheme of things it will probably be pretty easy if this is your first year as a business and you've been tracking your expenses.   what is reasonable compensation to demand if a landlord wants us out early?

  1 0 I've got no specific expertise in leasing issues, but if the landlord is wanting you to move out early I'd DEFINITELY ask for waived or discounted rent for February . . . the fact is, somehow keeping you there until March is costing him money, otherwise he wouldn't have asked, so it's just a matter of making it cheaper for you to leave than stay (if you have that option). If he is planning on repainting, remodeling, whatever, then I would also ask him for full security deposits back, since he has to pay to get stuff done anyway.   1 0 Since you are having a hard time making ends meet, I would suggest credit counseling and education . . . they can work with your creditors to modify your terms AND create a program that is within your means: http://www.myfinancialgoals.org/ American Financial Solutions can give you lots of info on how best to approach your problems. Financial planner would not have the same weight or access to creditors to help modify your situation, so for now I don't think you should consider seeing one.   Should I pay off my bills in collections?

  0 0 Right now, you might be able to settle with the credit card companies for less than you owe, which I personally prefer because then you're not completely walking away from your debt and the settlement will be reflected on your credit reports. The credit industry is so messed up right now; who knows what it will look like and how that will affect your credit in the future. People with excellent credit scores are getting dinged for stuff they have no control over. If this is about owning a home, you'll also need cash flow and cash reserve, the last two legs of the optimal homebuyer trinity . . . and overall, it would be better to be able to say to whoever is funding your home loan that you settled your accounts, instead of saying you blew them off :o) I don't see saving money and improving credit as an "either/or" decision, so I would look for a solution that considers both objectives equally important.
