    Any update on this?

  • Carboxy-THC: how much in plasma (ng/ml) typically results in impairment?
    Labcoat_small

There are a lot of questions here.

First of all, -COOH is chemical shorthand for a carboxyl group, so yes, they are the same thing.

As for the amount of THC and THC-COOH in chronic users and the rate at which detection declines see these graphs:

    1) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3159863/figure/F2/

    2) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2784185/figure/F1/

The first shows the decline of THC levels in patient plasma during a 7 day abstinence. The second a larger sample group under similar conditions.

The important thing to understand is that THC-COOH is the byproduct of THC metabolism in the body after release from tissues. This ratio of THC/THC-COOH can be used as a measure of the rate at which THC is removed from the blood.

As for what levels will result in impairment, that is a complicated question. First you have to define impairment, then take in to account the fact that everyone has a different physiology (body size, metabolism, whether or not you are accustomed to cannabinoids) and finally that this sort of question isn't easy to study. It isn't scientifically ethical to tell people to light up and then see how well they drive for instance.

Here is one paper I found that gives an idea of limits(3):

"Limited epidemiological studies indicate that serum concentrations of THC below 10 ng/ml are not associated with an elevated accident risk. A comparison of meta-analyses of experimental studies on the impairment of driving-relevant skills by alcohol or cannabis suggests that a THC concentration in the serum of 7-10 ng/ml is correlated with an impairment comparable to that caused by a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05%."

You're final question about how long it takes for THC to be detectable is really going to depend on the same physiology variables I mentioned above. It also depends HEAVILY on how much you smoke and I can't quickly find much information on it.

I did, however, find a study where the injected a pig with massive amount of THC and looked at how it was distributed throughout the body(4). Crazy.

ps. Please forgive spelling/grammar errors. I'm writing this on the quick.

  • Herman Cain's 9-9-9 plan: plagaristic evil ripoff of Simcity, or sly evil plan to kill small businesses?
    Labcoat_small

    Or neither.

Maybe he just thinks it is a good plan. He's an idiot sure, but evil/good at simcity? That may be a bit of a stretch.

  • I feel a sore throat coming on...what should I do??? I don't want to get sick!!!
    Labcoat_small

All of these suggestions are fine, but they all are for treatment of SYMPTOMS not cures of any kind.

Kristin, feel better soon. You're sore throat may just be allergies or irritation. Netti-pots (fucking gross IMHO), and saline gargles will help relieve these potential ailments. If however you do have a bacterial/viral infection your sore throat indicates that you are already sick!

Rest is good, juice is good. Your immune system is in control now. If it is viral then sit back and be ggod to your body while it heals itself. A bacterial infection may presage the need for antibiotics.

If you have a high or persistent fever, go to the doctor.

  • Why do some electric receptacles use 2 hot wires?
    Labcoat_small

    Russ is correct.
But, dude. If you don't know this then you really shouldn't be digging around in your outlets. Get a book about home wiring and read it. Then get an outlet tester a voltage sniffer and a multimeter before doing anything else.

I hope/assume you are turning off the power while you're doing this, but keep in mind while white=neutral, black=hot, green=ground is the correct color coding, this is OFTEN done wrong and without the proper tools you can't know for sure.

Also, if you end up wiring 3-way switches or other 'complex' circuits this coloring does not apply.

AC will fuck you up the second you make a mistake. Don't cut corners.

  • That musky smelk in my washing machine?
    Labcoat_small

Probably some mold/mildew like situation. A few possibilities:

First I would open the trap and clean it out thoroughly. I find that a lot of people don't even know about these things. It's probably on the front at the bottom behind a little door or something.

While the machine cleaner probably does a fine job of cleaning the outflow pipes well enough, it won't touch the inflow hot and cold hoses. Turn off the water and unscrew them from the inlets. There may very well be some gunk in there.

Lastly I would suggest running a hot cycle with a bit more bleach than you would normally use, maybe a cup or so. Run another hot cycle with out bleach afterwards and give it the old smelk test.

  • Export iTunes data to Excel?
    Labcoat_small

    Hey Fnarf-

I have two options for you.

    1) If you have a PDF reader on your phone and acrobat on your computer you can File->Print and save an album list as a PDF.

You may need to have acrobat pro for this and it won't work if you really want it as an excel file.

    2) Make a playlist that includes all of your albums (or any subset of them). Go to File->Library->Export Playlist. Change the extension to .csv, save and open (it should automatically open with excel).

Now you have a list of all songs with all of the relevant meta data. Since you only want a list of albums make a new column after the albums and add this function: =IF(D2=D1,"",D2)

Drag the function down to the bottom (encompassing all albums), copy special (values) to a new worksheet and sort. You should now have what you're looking for.

It should actually be fairly easy to write a script that dynamically updates this list every day or whenever. But that may be more than you need.

    Buena suerte.

  • Any vacation advice for (maybe?) going to Hawaii?
    Labcoat_small

I've been to the islands a couple of times and for a more chill (an more interesting than Honolulu) experience I recommend forgetting about O'ahu altogether, especially if you've been. There are many nice places on that island outside the city, of course, but there are some overlooked islands.

My favorite is Maui. It does have a bit of reputation for partying and wealth, but if you can find a decent place to stay, there is a lot to do there and it is beautiful everywhere. And the weather is always perfect.

I would also highly recommend Hilo on the big island. It is very chill, good farmers markets, less touristy, great botanical gardens and hiking/volcanoes/snorkeling/etc./etc. It's a pretty neat place.

  • Diesel as fuel oil?
    Labcoat_small

Fuel oil is a broad term that usually means any petroleum product that is designed to create heat or do work. For this reason diesel IS a type of fuel oil. In a maritime sense fuel oil is a heavy, very long hydrocarbon chain, product used to power big ships (i.e. bunker fuel).

I guess that you mean to ask if diesel can work in a home furnace or boiler. The answer is yes. Number two diesel is the same thing as heating oil. The only difference is that heating oil is sometimes dyed red as it can be taxed differently depending on your state.
