  • What's a fair daily wage for a house/dog sitter these days?
    Avatar_default

I don't think it's too little. I am not a college student, and was recently paid $25/day to house-sit, which in my case involved watering several plants/beds around the yard and maintaining a cat, a hamster and a fish. I'm not an experienced house-sitter and I had no idea how much I was going to be getting paid, but I was pretty happy with the rate. I guess it depends on how much actual work he is going to have to do vs. how much time he'll be sitting around. I spent maybe 30-60 minutes a day doing actual work and the rest of the time enjoying the amazing view and extensive cable television, so $25 was a pretty good deal for me.

  • Where can I go to catch a glimpse of Obama tomorrow without buying a $500 dinner?
    Avatar_default

He's going to be at Grand Central Bakery in Pioneer Square as his first stop (early afternoon, I believe). It's not a public appearance, but you might be able to catch a glimpse. And if you miss him, you can get yourself some tasty food, so not all is lost. Full story here - http://www.king5.com/news/business/President-Visits-Seattle-Bakery-100812864.html

    Good luck!

  • A fish vendor threatened to kick my ass when I caught him scamming me. The farmers market offered me a $20 coupon for my troubles. Should I take it?
    Avatar_default

The market managers absolutely can (and should) kick him out of the market. The fact that they are aware of the issue and haven't already done so probably means this is a longtime and popular vendor, and they are trying to balance customer demand with bad behavior. One of the basic rules (there are MANY, and they vary by market) for anyone selling anything at a farmers market is properly labeling products. If you can prove that the product was mislabeled, they would have hard evidence of a violation. While I realize this isn't the most concerning infraction, it might be the easiest to prove. If this was indeed at the Madrona Market, I would try contacting the Seattle markets via email or phone and see what they can do. The behind the scenes organizers may not know about the issue and may have more power to remove a vendor. Here's the link for all the contact info -

    And the rules -

The markets are very selective about who they let in, so they really ought to be just as picky about who stays. There are many vendors who would be willing to fill their spot. Oh, and to answer your actual question, of course you should take it! Spend it anywhere but at this asshole's booth. Good luck.

  • How common is it for jobs to only provide insurance after 2-3 months of employment?
    Avatar_default

To confirm what has already been said, yes this is fairly standard. 90 days for insurance, and up to a year for vacation. That's the way it was at my employer anyway. Sick time was available right away, and they were cool about letting me use a couple of my vacation days before the first year was up, you know, so I didn't go crazy. I'd consider youself lucky to be eligible for vacation after 2-3 months. Welcome to full time jobs. They kinda suck. Except the part when you get paid (and the part where you get paid for not being there is best of all).

  • What to do/Where to go for casual date on Friday night?
    Avatar_default

I realize Friday has passed, but there will be more, so here's some ideas:

    1) Citizen - this is a super adorable crepe/coffee/sandwich/wine place on the southeast side of Queen Anne (right by QFC). It's very chill, not too expensive, yet still has a romantic atmosphere. Food is good, and if I'd seen this question yesterday, I would have directed you towards their ridiculous living social coupon.
    2) The Can Can (Pike Place) - I just went here for the first time and it was super fun. You can have dinner and drinks while you watch (or just drinks and dessert to keep the bill low). Tickets are about $10 I think. They've had strangermart coupons consistently for about a year, so if you buy one of those, it'll be cheaper.
    3) On the Boards - this is a cool little theater space at the bottom of the hill (1st Ave W and Roy). I've been meaning to go for a while, as I've heard excellent things from friends. Tickets are around $20. If you time it right, you could hit happy hour at The Sitting Room (super cute bar/restaurant next door) before your show.

    Have fun!

  • Is 23 too old to have never been kissed?
    Avatar_default

You're not a loser. While your situation may not be typical, it doesn't make you a freak, and it certainly doesn't make you destined to never be kissed. Physical attractiveness has very little to do with anything - ugly people make out ALL OF THE TIME. A little bit of confidence will go a long way. Alcohol (not too much) could help as well. Next time someone hits on you, start a conversation, be open to it and see what happens. Also, don't think that the first person you kiss has to be one of the great loves of you life. A kiss can be just a kiss. It can also be so much more - good luck and enjoy!

  • What TV show should I watch next?
    Avatar_default

    All around entertaining shows:
    It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Party Down (available on Netflix streaming)
    Nurse Jackie
    Northern Exposure

    Extremely addictive melodramas:
    Gossip Girl
    Brothers & Sisters

    God I love TV!

  • One month left: where should I eat?
    Avatar_default

Go to Cafe Presse (http://www.cafepresseseattle.com/pages/home.php), order the croque monsieur or madame, the frites, and possibly the green salad. Or, get a glass of wine instead of the salad. This will be more food than 1 person should eat in one sitting, and will set you back about $15. And it will be delicious.

  • What do you do to break yourself out of a really bad mood?
    Avatar_default

1 glass of wine + mellow music or a good book usually does the trick for me!

  • Would you rather have naturally straight hair or naturally curly hair?
    Avatar_default

Like many people with naturally curly hair, mine went from straight to intensely curly right around puberty. Along with my body being all gangly and weird, I suddenly had hair I didn't know what to do with. Ugh. I complained incessantly, used every straightening hair product I could find, and finally, for Christmas, my parents gave me a gift certificate to have it chemically straightened. At first I was excited, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I had grown to kind of like my newly curly hair. I decided to trade in the gift certificate for something else. It was a good lesson (although I think unintentional on my parents' part - they just wanted me to stop complaining all the time) to learn to be happy with what you've got.
