  • Why can't I edit a question in the Stranger Questionland after posting?
    555_pinout_small

You can edit it for 15 minutes after you post it. The idea being that it gives you time to correct any errors etc. but after that other people may have answered/commented and at that point it is part of the context of the whole "discussion" and if we allowed it to change it could render other answers/comments meaningless.

We always try and strike a balance between the person answering and the community should they ever have different demands.

We actually think this is a little too restrictive on the contributor and have discussed changing it for a while. One idea is to allow it to be changed as long as there are no other contributions related to it. I think that would be a better solution.

In the meantime, you can always email feedback@questionland.com and have us change things (keep in mind our guidelines above if you do that). We don't ever want people to feel they are stuck with having written something they'd prefer wasn't there. Typically it's dealt with very easily and quickly.

Thanks for asking and for being part of Questionland.

p.s. It's not "The Stranger's Questionland", although given that we are such close partners it's an understandable thing to think. Questionland is independent and, as I'm sure you have noticed, quite different although much of the core membership of Questionland are also readers of The Stranger. If you ask me, that is a simple IQ test and so we get the people who passed. What other paper would you read in Seattle?

  • How can I ask a question to a specific person on Questionland?
    555_pinout_small

    MR,

Griffin is right that there used to be such a feature but it is gone. You can no longer direct questions to specific people. It turned out that it was rarely used and when it was, it was usually in error. So it caused more harm then good. It also assumed the person had email notifications turned on because they wouldn't see it otherwise. So all in all, gone.

Your question is probably better posed to the larger group anyway because there are a lot of people who may know the answer to that one. In addition company reps monitor questions about their products as best they can and occasionally come and answer (while their answers have potential for bias they also tend to refer to specific facts/data/guarantees).

So, you might want to ask that question again, and not bury under the lesser question.

And btw, thanks for being such a great part of Questionland.

  • How does Youtube decide the order of search results?
    555_pinout_small

I don't know, but since YouTube is a Google company I can take a pretty good guess:

    1. Google's search algorithms are extremely complex and sophisticated. Furthermore they are designed to try and ensure that no one can figure them out easily enough to game them.

    2. Google typically ranks results based on the behavior of viewers and site owners. So if a lot of people link to a given video or embed it then each of those instances is considered a "vote" for that video.

    3. They will also incorporate things like actual votes, views, keywords/tags, etc.

    4. I'm sure they also rank videos based on how much of the video was watched. Did people abandon it after a 30 seconds or watch the whole thing.

So the short answer is that it is designed so that you cannot easily figure it out and it incorporates every bit of data about the video that is available - esp. the behavior of other sites and people watching.

    Hope that helps a little.

  • What's the best new burger place?
    555_pinout_small

    My two favorites are:

    1. Little Woody's
    2. Bravehorse Tavern

Both are excellent, although I lean towards LW's because they are in Capitol Hill and excellent fries... and actually a better burger for a better price.

What to expect when you weren't expecting.

    A pain in the ass

  • Will extra options be added to the Search function on Questionland?
    555_pinout_small

    Russ,

Sorry for the insane sort order. The sort order is a bug pure and simple - it's prioritizing incorrectly.

Maintaining the selected search type is a good idea and pretty straightforward.

It turns out that this search bug is a bigger deal than I had thought and the Gnome will hopefully be able to dig in very soon to resolve it.

Thanks as usual for the great feedback.

  • Best spot for Thanksgiving dinner
    555_pinout_small

Seattle Met has a great list of places to eat out on Thanksgiving. From $10 at Linda's (TV Dinner... no kidding, yuk) to $225 at the Herbfarm and of course plenty in between.

  • Should something be done about the new layout?
    555_pinout_small

    Kip,

We've heard you (and the others) and are working on a better solution as we speak. I'm literally on the phone with Gnome right now. He's hard to understand over a phone btw.

We're looking at a more personalized approach and have narrowed it to two options:

    1. Allow people to configure it the way they want it. Upside is great control and downside is it involves some set up by you guys.

    2. Make it so that whatever view you had last on the site shows up next time you come to the site. Less control but zero effort.

In anticipation of your next question...

"Why don't we just do it 'right' to begin with (i.e make it latest answers and put them on the right, and latest questions and put them on the left)?"

    let me say this...

If you are an active contributor to the site (and we love you for that) then your needs are slightly different from the people who are browsers of the site (i.e. readers). The latter prefer to have the favorites appears so they can focus on the best stuff - and usually they wouldn't know about what the best stuff was unless they read everything.

    So...

The changes have not sat well with the active contributors (did I mention how we feel about you?) and we are going to fix that so you get exactly what you want (to the best of the Gnome's ability/time constraints).

    Finally,

I'd like to say how much we appreciate the way you have all given us feedback. In true Questionland style, you have been kind when you were annoyed and always found something good to say to us. We really appreciate that kindness.

  • Murder/Suicide in West Seattle from a few weeks ago?
    555_pinout_small

If you want to be nosy, you can see comments from the son and others who knew the couple here:

    http://www.westseattleherald.com/node/182751

It would appear (if these are legitimate comments) that the father was quite a piece of work and the son says he tried to get protection for his mother from the police long before this happened.

  • iPhone 4S is now available on Sprint. Should I do it?
    555_pinout_small

Sprint is consistently rate the worst for coverage in the Seattle area and will be even worse in the outskirts.

I'd love to switch too, but I think you'd regret it unless you happened to spending your time around a Sprint tower all the time.

Here's a map of towers in Seattle:
