  • What kind of bird(s) should I consider?
    Sleestak_small

I've only had experience with canaries and lovebirds. Male canaries will sing if they're alone, but not if they have female canaries with them. I think they live around 10-15 years or so (mine lived 10). Lovebirds don't really sing at all, they just screech.

    That's my 2 cents.

LMNOP, I'm not talking about the economy though, I'm just talking about ebay.

If a person has no set maximum, or if they're willing to increase their maximum, THEN it would be worthwhile to go in at the last minute or to keep checking during the final minutes.

However, I chose my maximum when I see the item. My maximum doesn't change, no matter what. Therefore, it makes zero difference whether I bid early or late, especially since it appears there are plenty of people who will always go in at the final minutes of any bid anyway... If my maximum is $50 and someone is determined to win the item at any cost, then they'll get it, whether I wait until the last minute or not.

Like I mentioned in my original answer: If a person has a set maximum that they won't increase no matter what, then I stand by the answer that it doesn't matter in the slightest when the bid is placed.

In fact, if you place a bid early, then anyone later who places a bid at the same max amount as you won't get it. If my max is $50 and another person's max is $50, then whoever places their bid first is the one who'll get it. So in that way it's better to bid as early as possible.

    Showing your hand early?

Nobody sees my max bid except me. How does that "show my hand" at all?

If the max I'm willing to pay for something is $50, and the current high bid is $20, I'll be the current winner at ~$21 or so. If someone wants to keep upping by a dollar, they can have at it all they want, I'll still be the winner unless they go over $50, which is the max I'm willing to spend anyway, so they can take it.

Seriously, what is the point of bidding at the last minute when everyone's max bid is invisible anyway?

  • What's the strategy for winning an auction on eBay?
    Sleestak_small

Be the highest bidder. Doesn't matter if you bid 10 days ahead of close or 10 seconds ahead of close.

If I find an item I like, I bid the max amount I'd be willing to pay for it. Then I forget about it until the closing time and check when it's all over to see if I won or not.

Thise is essentially the exact suggestion ebay gives.

Bidding at the last second is a complete waste of time - UNLESS - you're willing to go over what you had already decided was your maximum. I never go over so I never bother with last minute bids. I have better things to do with my time.

  • Why do staff members in *most* (not all) psych wards pretty much ignore patients a good amount of the time?
    Sleestak_small

I worked as a psychiatric technician in a Minneapolis hospital psych ward. At the beginning of each shift, we (the psych techs) were assigned 4 to 5 patients each. I'd read my patient's charts and the last thing the tech before me had written. I always checked in on each of my patients at least once during my shift. The most frequent response I got when I asked how they were doing or if they needed anything was "I'm fine, please just leave me alone." So I tried to respect their wishes. If they wanted to talk though, I was always available (I enjoyed it actually, since most of the time the work there was really boring).

So it may seem that staff are ignoring the patients but in my experience, the patients almost always just wanted to be left alone.

If you're being deliberately ignored though, like you mentioned in your comment to internet_jen, then that's a bad thing. You could file a complaint with the hospital or alert the administration. Most of us who worked in the wards were very compassionate about helping the patients when they asked.

  • Tips for a first time marathon runner?
    Sleestak_small

Well, other than just getting out there and running, here's a couple tips that you might not hear elsewhere:

    1. Your skin might get chafed and scratched... repetitive rubbing of the clothes against the skin for a couple hours. When doing practice runs, be sure to run in the outfit you plan to wear on the half-marathon to see if it irritates your skin in any particular location. Then be sure to use vaseline or something on the actual day of the run. I didn't know about this when I ran a full marathon and afterwards my, er... nipples... looked like someone rubbed sandpaper over them all day. Ouch.

    2. Take some of those energy gel packs with you (they're available at most sports stores). You can get fancy carriers, or just do what I did and saftey pin them to your waistband. Practice taking some and eating them on your practice runs so you know which ones you like best and how many you want to bring. If you bring any caffeinated ones with you, save them for the end of the marathon... they'll dehydrate you a little.

    3. If you normally run on a treadmill, be sure to do some random uphills/downhills so you're prepped when you do the actual run.

That's about all I've got. Have a great time!

Fried moms are a bit too greasy. I prefer poached moms.
