  • What men have been linked to folk singer Joan Baez?
    N658991070_769_small

I'll check in with a very enthusiastic seconding of The Mayor of Macdougal Street--it's a wonderful book.

Also, bit of self promotion, but my play that I was asking for feedback on in another thread is about Bob, Joan, and Dave (amongst others) if any of you are interested in reading it.

  • What duets would you love to see happen?
    N658991070_769_small

Top be the list has to be the one that almost happened--Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis. I'm frequently tormented by the thought of how great that album could have been.

Richard Thompson and Tracy Chapman has always been a dream for me--I can't help but here the "you're someone I can't help betray" part in I'll Never Give It Up in her voice in my head.

Others I think could be fun:

Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen (gravel vocies ftw!)

Derek Trucks and Joss Stone (guitar/vocals)

Victor Wooten and Robert Randolph (bass/guitar)

Any playwrites/writers/theater fans willing to give some feedback?

  • Mystery suggestions?

Tony Hillerman is a truly marvellous writer--his books feature clever, well crafted stories, well developed characters who actually grow and change book to book, and absolutely beautiful descriptive writing--plus you gain a lot of interesting insight into the culture and beliefs of the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and other tribes of the Southwest--all without the faintest shred of coziness. People of Darkness, Skinwalkers, and The Wailing Wind are three of my favorites.

If you want a more traditional police-based mystery, I'd go with any of K.C. Constantine's Mario Balzic series. What really stands out immediately here is the realism of the cases--there are no cheap theatrics or iprobable twists, just the bleak detail of the actual sort of cases a homicide detective might face. Here too, the setting does a lot; Balzic is the Chief of Police in a small, economically depressed town of Italian-American families outside Philadelphia, and figuring out whodunit is often a matter of piecing together who owes what to who. Plus, he's a great character--he drinks too much, but this is not milked for melodrama, he's in bed with the (reasonably benign) local mob in an effort to keep the peace, and often the best he can manage is a partial solution. Try "A Fix Like This" to start off with.

  • If you lose a bunch of weight or gain a bunch of weight, how do you adjust to being a differently seen person in the world? (psychologically speaking)
    N658991070_769_small

In my case, it's been one of getting my self image to line up with other people's. Sophomore year of high-school, I weighed upwards of 230 pounds, had atrocious acne, and was horribly awkward--so, unsurprisingly, I had very bad luck with girls, and developed this strong sense that any girl who was particularly pretty or talented was out of my league and I shouldn't even try. Now (having just finished sophomore year of college) I'm down to 195, the acne is gone, and I've gotten reasonably good at social interaction, but I still tend to see myself as that kid, and those women as out of my league. Fortunately, one such amazing woman took it upon herself to ask me out, and so far things have been going really well--but I still sometimes look at her and have to fight off thoughts like "what's someone like you doing with me."

  • What are some of your favorite sad but pretty songs to listen to?
    N658991070_769_small

A whole, whole bunch by Richard Thompson:

    Al Bowlly's in Heaven

    Beeswing

God Loves a Drunk (single saddest song I've ever heard)

    1952 Vincent Black Lightning

    King of Bohemia

    Walking on a Wire.

  • Why does my boyfriend get lightheaded when we have sex?
    N658991070_769_small

I'd bet it's a blood pressure/flow thing. I pass out randomly at times and my blood pressure evidently just crashes when it happens. Tell him not to move too quickly and keep well hydrated. Also probably good not to do it either on an empty stomach or right after eating.

  • Oral sex and Aspergers
    N658991070_769_small

That is frustrating indeed. I'm an Aspie myself, but while I got the spatial awareness stuff and the crippled fine motor skills (dysgraphia), I managed to miss the unpleasant-sensations part of the sensory integration issues--and in my limited sexual experience, giving oral was perhaps the most enjoyable part.

With that said, I might wonder how much of it is just nervousness/performance anxiety. Just speaking from personal experience, I get nervous having to perform any new, complex physical task out of fear I'll do it wrong--and that's magnified about tenfold when sex is concerned. If you can manage to ease him into it--kissing around the area etc., and demonstrate how much you enjoy what he's doing, it may give him enough confidence to overcome the initial trepidation.

  • What is the worst Trader Joe's food you have consumed?
    N658991070_769_small

I love TJ's, but I once accidentally bought a jar of *sweet* olive spread by mistake. It was utterly horrifying.

  • Songs about intergenerational warfare?
    N658991070_769_small

Studfinder, "I hope I die before I get old" is in My Generation--which would be an excellent choice for such a playlist. (and the song you mean is called Baba O'Riley).

    Some other good ones-

The Real Me-also by The Who (and featuring one of the best basslines of all time

The Ascent of Stan-Ben Folds 5 (About "changing sides" without realizing as one gets old)

    Army-Ben Folds Five

    Almost Cut My Hair-CSNY

    Career Opportunities- The Clash

I'll never give it up-Richard Thompson

Honor Thy Father-Dream Theater (GREAT prog-metal stuff)

Anything from the soundtrack to Hair

and of course, The Times They are A'Changin bu Bob Dylan: "Come mothers and fathers throughout the land/and don't criticize what you can't understand/your sons and your daughters are beyond your command/your old road is rapidly agin'/ please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand/for the times, they are a'changin"
