What interesting/fun/non-trashy-plastic/non-candy items to put in a pinata?

  • Hippopotapas: Good name for a tapas restaurant?
    Avatar_default

Until tapas reach a level of whimsy that sushi has reached, silly kitschy names won't be cute, but just weird. "Sushi BamBushi" and shit like that is funny because sushi is so ubiquitous as to be almost cartoony. "UnPhoGettable" is cute because there are 10Billion Pho restaurants and it helps them stand out. There are still only a few tapas restaurants around, and tapas is still sort of a fancy commodity, so it's not begging for cutesy versions yet. If tapas become the next sushi/Pho/kabap, then yeah, Hippopotapas is actually kinda hilarious.

Blah blah blah. :-) Thumbs up for asking a funny question.

Vacation Rentals By Owner is a great site and you can find nice places cheaper than formal corporate places (thought a lot of people on there have "businesses" renting their houses...) We stayed at a great little house on Whidbey Island a few weekends ago, and had a blast just chillin' by the fireplace.

Where is it most likely to be warm(ish) and sunny in Seattle in mid-April?

These are great answers, but I was hoping for some sort of well-researched and articulate "authoritative" piece I could point her to... Some folks just respond better to "an article" rather than my own explanation.

For the record, here's what I said:
Because they are a historically oppressed people. For generations, they've faced abuse, imprisonment, and physical violence for expressing who they are and who they love. The pride parades show solidarity of community, and show young gays and lesbians that they aren't alone, and that there are others like them who will support them, even if their biological families reject them (which they often do). The parades are held in late June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonewall_riots), which are often considered the beginning of the gay-rights, and gay-visibility movements.

Men who dig blondes have never had to hide that preference from their families, and they've never been imprisoned or beaten just for being in love with a blonde. Straight couples can walk down the street holding hands without fear of ridicule or attack (although that hasn't always been true of interracial straight couples...). Young straight people have never been disowned by their families simply for being "straight." The comparisons are disingenuous.

I'd love to know whether that answers your question.

What's a good resource to send people who ask "Why do gays need a pride parade?"

  • What's the most boring state to drive through?
    Avatar_default

Kansas and Oklahoma are flat and boring as all hell... And nothing but totally homogeneous ag fields. That north/south belt east of the Rockies and west of the hills that start in Arkansas is flat pretty much everywhere I've been, but I've never driven through the Dakotas or Nebraska.

But even those flat areas have cool side-trips. If you end up going through Missouri, be sure to stop at Lambert's Home of Throwed Rolls!! It's totally worth the pop down to I-70, though I can't guarantee it's worth driving Kansas instead of Nebraska. But then, Kentucky is hella prettier than Indiana or Ohio... Are you willing to veer north and south to hit the prettier landscapes and kitschier side trips?

Or maybe be really bold and drive up through Canada?

Where in Texas do you think is boring? Central Texas, between Dallas and San Antonio, is gorgeous especially during the spring when the wildflowers are blooming. The East Texas piney woods and rolling hills are lovely all year. West Texas has it's ups and downs... mountainous with great rock formations and really complex desert ecosystem. The panhandle and north Texas is pretty flat and desolate, though.

Green Bean Casserole! Fresh green beans, cream-of-mushroom soup, baked and topped with french-fried onions from a can! That's the basic version... You can spice it up by adding sauteed mushrooms, caramelized onions, grated asiago cheese, or what have you.

    Nom nom nom!

Ha! Okay, I just read your whole question, and you poo-poo green bean casserole... But I'm telling you! It's delicious and you can really fancy it up by using a fancy mushroom soup, adding some extra sauteed mushrooms for chunkyness and smokeyness, and grated asiago or gouda on top. :-)
